Not every Nintendo Switch 2 physical release works the same way. A regular game card and a game-key card are different formats: a game-key card requires an internet download of the full game data, and the card must still be inserted to play. Check the exact release’s packaging or Nintendo Store/eShop listing for its required free space before buying or downloading.
How do Nintendo Switch 2 game cards work?
Nintendo Switch 2 games come on regular game cards or game-key cards. With a regular game card, the card contains the game data; with a game-key card, the card is a key that authorizes downloading the full game data to console storage or a microSD Express card. Nintendo also identifies physical cards for Switch 2 exclusive software, Switch 2 Edition games, and compatible Nintendo Switch software. Those compatibility categories do not determine whether a specific release is a game-key card; check the packaging for the format.

What is a game-key card?
A game-key card is a physical card that acts as a key to download and launch a game; it does not contain the full game data. Insert it and follow the HOME Menu instructions to download the title. The download needs an internet connection and enough free space at its destination.
The required free space is listed on that release’s packaging and on its Nintendo Store or eShop page. Check the specific title: game size cannot be reliably inferred from the card format, and Nintendo’s reviewed support pages do not provide one exhaustive, dated table of download sizes.

- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Can you play without the game-key card once the game data has downloaded?
No. The game-key card still needs to be inserted whenever you play. Nintendo says an internet connection is required for the first launch; after that, the game can start offline, provided the card is inserted.
Is a Nintendo Account needed to download the game data?
Nintendo says a Nintendo Account is not required to download a game-key-card title’s data. An internet connection is still required for the download and first launch.
How much storage does Switch 2 have, and how much should you leave free?
Nintendo lists 256 GB of system storage, with a portion reserved for console use, so the full 256 GB is not available for games and other user data. Nintendo’s data FAQ currently says no individual games require additional storage to play. That does not remove the need for enough free space to download a game-key-card title; check the title’s stated requirement before starting.

Downloaded software, updates, and DLC can use system storage or a supported microSD Express card. If an Express card is inserted, it becomes the default destination for downloadable software. Save data remains in system memory and cannot be copied or saved to the microSD Express card.

Nintendo currently says no individual games require additional storage to play. Expansion can still be useful if you want more room for downloadable games, updates, DLC, screenshots, or captured video, or if a game-key-card download will not fit in the available system space. The particular download’s free-space requirement is separate from Nintendo’s statement that additional storage is not required to play any individual game.
Can I use a microSD card on Nintendo Switch 2?
Only microSD Express cards can store or load Switch 2 game data and captures. Ordinary microSD cards used with the original Nintendo Switch cannot store or load Switch 2 games or save data. Nintendo supports microSD Express cards that meet the standard up to 2 TB; cards are sold separately.

- Supported on microSD Express: downloadable software, updates, DLC, screenshots, and captured video.
- Not stored there: game saves, which remain in system memory.
- First use: Nintendo’s compatibility guidance says an internet-connected system update is required to use a microSD Express card.
Nintendo recommends using one microSD Express card. Software stored across multiple cards cannot later be combined onto one card, although data can be copied to a larger card. Choose an Express card that explicitly meets the standard, and do not assume an older microSD card will work for Switch 2 game storage.

- Check the specific physical release’s packaging to see whether it is a regular game card or a game-key card.
- If it is a game-key card, check the packaging or Nintendo Store/eShop page for the required free space.
- Decide whether the available system storage is enough or whether you need a microSD Express card; the game-key card remains necessary to play even after downloading.
- If using an Express card for the first time, connect to the internet to install the system update Nintendo requires for compatibility.
These details follow Nintendo’s official guidance on physical game cards, game-key cards, Switch 2 data management, microSD Express storage, and microSD compatibility. Nintendo’s reviewed support pages do not state publication dates, so no page date is assigned here.
