For most eligible owners on supported platforms, it is worth installing: the upgrade is free within the same platform ecosystem and brings broad graphics, gameplay, and usability changes. PC owners should judge performance on their own hardware, since benchmark results vary by GPU and settings.
Which version are you comparing?
There are three relevant releases: the 2015 original, the December 2022 version 4.0 next-gen update, and the 2026 Remastered release. Remastered is a further update, not simply a new name for version 4.0.
The 2022 update added features including ray-traced global illumination and ambient occlusion, improved textures and environmental visuals, photo mode, an alternative closer camera, and cross-progression. Performance modes were added on PS5 and Xbox Series X; features varied by platform. For example, CD PROJEKT RED’s December 12, 2022 update notes state: “The Xbox Series S version has no ray-tracing features.”
The 2026 release extends those changes with another round of rendering, gameplay, and interface updates. It launched for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2.
#1 Best Overall
- Trained from early childhood and mutated to gain superhuman skills, strength, and reflexes, witchers are a counterbalance to the monster-infested world in which they live.
- Built for endless adventure, the massive open world of The Witcher sets new standards in terms of size, depth, and complexity.
- Take on the most important contract of your life: to track down the child of prophecy, the key to saving or destroying this world.
What changed in the 2026 Remastered release?
Rendering and image quality
CD PROJEKT RED says Remastered adds native DirectX 12 rendering with multithreading, revised shading and tone mapping, updated textures and models drawing on the HD Reworked Project, improved foliage lighting, GTAO, updated screen-space reflections and shadows, ray-traced local shadows, and improved HDR calibration. These changes target both image quality and rendering performance, but their impact depends on platform and settings.
On PC, the feature set includes path tracing, NVIDIA DLSS 4.5 with Ray Reconstruction, AMD FSR 4 on Radeon RX 7000-series cards and newer (with FSR 2 as a fallback on unsupported GPUs), Intel XeSS 2.0, and ray-traced HairWorks. The publisher says system requirements have changed; check its current game page rather than relying on older PC requirements.
Combat, skills, and camera
Combat receives updated animations and visual effects, new finishers, and adjusted enemy behavior. The skill tree and balance have also been revised. The alternative closer camera remains part of the experience. One independent reviewer praised the revised skill progression for making builds easier to shape; that is a reviewer’s assessment, not a controlled gameplay measurement.
Interface, customization, and mod support
Remastered adds transmogrification, an expanded photo mode, improved loot windows and notifications, more minimap controls, easier combat disengagement, mounted looting, and streamlined tutorials. It also includes cross-platform mod support through mod.io and a Bard’s Ballad preset with optional simplified mechanics.

Platform-specific features
Feature parity is not the goal: each platform has additions suited to its hardware. PS5 Pro support includes PSSR, VRR, uncapped frame rates, and updated graphics modes. Switch 2 support includes touch input, Joy-Con 2 HD Rumble, VRR in handheld mode, and HDR. PC adds DualSense haptics. PC features such as path tracing should not be assumed to be available on consoles.
How does performance compare?
There is no reliable one-line verdict that Remastered is always faster or always slower than the original on PC. TechSpot’s 2026 launch-period benchmark found results varied with GPU, resolution, and preset. On its test system, the RTX 5070 Ti was 7% slower than Classic at 1080p Ultra, 23% faster at 1440p Medium, and 23% slower at 1440p Ultra. At 4K Medium, TechSpot measured Remastered as 36% faster for the RTX 5070 Ti and 45% faster for the RX 9070 XT than the original. Those figures describe TechSpot’s specific test conditions, not expected results for every PC.
TechSpot also noted unusual GPU scaling and possible driver-related limits. Its testing found path tracing demanding and, in selected scenes, sometimes less visually convincing than conventional ray tracing. A separate GamesRadar review reported occasional slowdowns in busy scenes or combat during its review period; this is launch-context testimony, not a controlled benchmark or proof that later patched versions have the same issue.
Patch status changes over time. CD PROJEKT RED’s availability notice listed PC hotfix 5.00c and console/Xbox Play Anywhere patch 5.00b, both dated October 1, 2026. Check the publisher’s current notes for later updates before troubleshooting a performance problem.

Do you get the upgrade for free?
CD PROJEKT RED says physical and digital owners can upgrade free within the same platform ecosystem. That does not mean an entitlement automatically carries across ecosystems, so check the store account and platform where you own the game before buying another copy. The publisher says saves remain compatible and cross-progression continues; it does not guarantee that every mod will work with the updated game.
The publisher’s announcement says Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine are included for owners on GOG, Steam, Epic Games Store, Battle.net, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2. Its game FAQ says current storefronts offer the Complete Edition, which includes both expansions. Exact entitlement and install steps depend on your platform; confirm them in that platform’s store.
Is Remastered worth installing or buying?
If you already own The Witcher 3
On a supported current platform, install the free upgrade and see how the visual and control changes suit you. If you rely on mods or want the option to compare versions, make a backup save first; save compatibility does not guarantee mod compatibility.
If you play on PC
Check the updated official requirements and start with a non-ray-traced preset if you are unsure how your system will handle the new features. Compare frame pacing and image quality on your own PC before enabling path tracing. The benchmark results above are too configuration-specific to justify buying a graphics card solely for this game.

Compare the Complete Edition and offer available in your platform’s store, and check whether an existing account already qualifies for the free upgrade. If you play on PS5 Pro or Switch 2, weigh the features available on that specific platform rather than expecting the PC feature set.
