PS5 PSSR Settings: How to Balance Image Quality and Performance

Use the PS5 Pro’s Enhance PSSR Image Quality setting in supported games, then compare the same scene on and off to decide which result you prefer.

On PS5 Pro, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Enhance PSSR Image Quality. Sony says the option is on by default and is available only on consoles in the CFI-7000 model group. Try it in a game that supports PSSR, compare the same scene with the option on and off—including while moving—and keep the result you prefer. Sony warns that results vary by game, so there is no universal best setting.

What Enhance PSSR Image Quality does

PSSR is Sony’s image-reconstruction and upscaling technology for compatible PS5 Pro games. Sony describes it as analyzing game images pixel by pixel as it upscales them. The optional system setting applies to PS5 Pro games that already support PSSR; it does not enable PSSR in every PS5 game or guarantee the same visual improvement in each title. Sony’s PS5 Pro product page cautions: “Results will vary by title.”

Sony’s March 2026 explanation says the upgraded PSSR aims for more precise image reconstruction and improved stability in motion. The setting is framed around image quality; it is not a universal frame-rate mode, and the available information does not establish one consistent performance cost across games.

Where to find the setting

  1. On a PS5 Pro, open Settings.
  2. Select Screen and Video, then Video Output.
  3. Select Enhance PSSR Image Quality to switch the option on or off.

Sony says the option is on by default and is limited to consoles in the CFI-7000 model group. The setting’s availability does not mean every installed game supports PSSR. Check Sony’s current PS5 Pro game list for published examples; the lineup may change as games launch or receive updates.

How to compare image quality in a game

Use a repeatable comparison rather than judging from a different scene or a single still image. Sony’s stated goals provide useful things to look for, but the following checks are viewing guidance—not benchmark results.

  1. Choose a PSSR-compatible game and a familiar scene. Use a scene where you can easily return to the same viewpoint.
  2. Compare small details. Inspect hair, cloth, foliage, thin geometry, or other fine features for clarity.
  3. Check while moving. Pan the camera or move through the scene and watch whether details remain visually coherent. Motion matters because Sony identifies stability in motion as an objective of upgraded PSSR.
  4. Look for distracting or unexpected effects. If the image looks worse or produces effects you do not want, turn the option off.
  5. Repeat the same comparison after switching. This helps separate the setting’s effect from differences in camera position or scene activity.

When to leave it on or turn it off

  • Leave it on if, in a supported game, you prefer the detail and image stability you see with it enabled.
  • Turn it off if the result is distracting or you notice unexpected visual effects. Sony specifically says players can disable the option in that situation.
  • Do not use the toggle as a substitute for a game’s graphics settings. It is a system-level image-quality option for compatible PSSR games, not a universal choice between frame-rate and resolution profiles.

Why results differ between games

PSSR support and implementation are title-dependent. Sony reported on February 27, 2026, that PSSR had been used to boost effective resolution in over 50 PS5 Pro titles at that time; that is a dated count, not a current total. The technology’s presence across many games does not make their results identical.

For example, Sony’s June 24, 2026 article on Doom: The Dark Ages describes that game’s reconstruction as using motion, depth, exposure, and sub-pixel sampling. That is a game-specific implementation, not evidence that every PSSR title uses the same pipeline. Sony also said on May 19, 2026, that 007 First Light would launch on PS5 Pro with upgraded PSSR enabled by default; that launch configuration should not be assumed to apply to other games or remain unchanged after updates.
