A console upgrade is worth it when it adds games or improvements you will actually use—and those benefits outweigh the full cost of switching. Start with the games you want, then check what changes for those specific titles, whether the new system fits how you play, and what you would need to buy alongside it.
Start with the games you want to play
The strongest reason to upgrade is access to games you cannot play on your current console, or a better experience in games you already care about. Make a short list of the titles that would make you buy the system. Then verify whether they are exclusive, available on your current console, or specifically enhanced on the new one.

For example, Sony’s 2024 PS5 Pro announcement named Alan Wake 2, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Hogwarts Legacy, and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 among its launch-period enhanced games. That is a list of examples, not a promise that every PS5 game gets the same treatment. Sony says PS5 Pro features apply only to selected enhanced games and vary by title (Sony’s PS5 Pro launch announcement).
If the games you play already run well on your current console, a more powerful machine may have little practical value—especially if its best-supported improvements apply to titles you do not plan to play.

Check what will change in the games you play
Performance is a game-by-game question, not a guarantee attached to a console’s name or specifications. Sony positions PS5 Pro as a way to get higher-fidelity graphics and smoother frame rates in supported games. Nintendo says Switch 2 can offer sharper visuals, smoother frame rates, and faster loading than the original Switch, depending on the software. Neither statement means every game receives every improvement.
Sony’s September 2024 figures for PS5 Pro—67% more GPU compute units, memory 28% faster, and up to 45% faster gameplay rendering than the then-current PS5—are manufacturer claims about hardware and rendering, not independent tests of every game or a direct comparison with another platform. Sony also described advanced ray tracing and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, its machine-learning-based upscaling technology. The practical question is whether a supported game uses these capabilities in a way you value, such as sharper image quality or a smoother frame rate. Sony said Game Boost could apply to more than 8,500 backward-compatible PS4 games playable on PS5 Pro and may stabilize or improve performance in supported PS4 and PS5 games; that figure does not mean every one of those games gets a guaranteed enhancement (Sony’s PS5 Pro feature announcement).
Before buying, look up the specific games on your list and confirm what the developer or platform says is supported. A general hardware specification cannot tell you whether a particular title offers a better image or frame rate on your setup.
Decide whether the system changes how you play
A new system can be worthwhile even when the improvement is not simply better graphics. Consider whether it enables a play format that your current console cannot provide or makes a common part of your routine more convenient.

PS5 Pro: a higher-performance model within the PS5 family
Sony describes PS5 Pro as part of the PS5 family, aimed at improving the presentation and performance of selected PS5 games. It is a premium revision, not a separate generation with a wholly different game library. Its value depends on whether the enhanced versions of games you play matter enough to you to justify moving from your current PS5.
Switch 2: a successor that keeps hybrid play
Nintendo Switch 2 retains TV, tabletop, and handheld modes while adding newer processing and graphics capabilities. That makes it a more substantial change for someone who wants newer games or improvements while keeping the option to play away from a TV. Nintendo lists 256 GB of internal storage—eight times the original Switch’s capacity, with some space reserved for system use—and microSD Express support for expansion (Nintendo’s Switch 2 features page).
Verify old-game and accessory compatibility
Backward compatibility can make an upgrade easier, but it does not automatically carry over every game or accessory. Nintendo says Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, while warning that some titles may be unsupported or not fully compatible. Its guidance also shows that accessory support varies: the original Switch Pro Controller can pair wirelessly, but the original Switch dock is not compatible. Check the exact game and accessory before trading in or giving away an old system (Nintendo’s Switch and Switch 2 compatibility guidance).
Switch 2 also requires a microSD Express card for expandable game storage; a standard microSD card is not suitable for storing Switch 2 games. Nintendo’s video chat uses the console’s built-in microphone, but video requires a Nintendo Switch 2 Camera or another compatible USB-C camera, sold separately. Online features such as GameChat require internet access, a Nintendo Account, and a Nintendo Switch Online membership; availability and terms vary by country (Nintendo’s Switch 2 features page).

Check whether your setup can show the difference
A feature only adds value if your games and equipment can use it. Consider your display, where you play, and the capabilities you care about: for example, whether you want a higher-fidelity image on a TV or the flexibility of handheld play. If the benefit you are paying for depends on a display feature you do not have, or you mostly play in a mode that does not use it, the upgrade may matter less to you.
Network and country restrictions can also affect online functions. For Switch 2 GameChat, Nintendo specifies internet access, a Nintendo Account, and a Nintendo Switch Online membership, and notes that availability and terms vary by country. Check the current requirements for your region before counting an online feature as part of the upgrade’s value.
Compare the full cost with the benefit you will use
Use current prices in your region rather than treating launch pricing as a live quote. Sony listed PS5 Pro launch MSRP on November 7, 2024, at $699.99 USD, £699.99 GBP, €799.99 EUR, and ¥119,980 JPY including tax, and specified a 2 TB SSD. Those are historical launch details, not current retail prices (Sony’s PS5 Pro launch announcement).
Add up the console, any games you need to buy, storage or accessories you require, and any game upgrade costs. Then compare that total with the improvements you expect to use. Do not count an included or compatible feature as a saving unless it genuinely replaces something you would otherwise purchase.

- List the games. Name the new games you want and the current games for which you would value an improvement.
- Verify support title by title. Check whether the games are available, compatible, or specifically enhanced on the new system, and what those enhancements are.
- Match benefits to your play habits. Decide whether you will use the performance improvements, display features, or TV, tabletop, and handheld options.
- Check what carries over. Confirm compatibility for your existing games, controllers, and other accessories before selling or trading in the old console.
- Calculate the current total. Include the console, games, storage, and accessories you actually need, using current regional prices.
- Buy only if the benefit clears the cost. If your favorite games already work well and the new system’s main advantages do not apply to your list, waiting is a reasonable choice.
