Nintendo Switch Sports supports a single Joy-Con for some sports, but controller needs vary by sport. To play without an internet connection, choose Play Locally; it lets one to four players share one console, depending on the sport, and a solo player can compete against computer opponents.
Can you play with one Joy-Con?
For some sports, yes. Nintendo lists single Joy-Con configurations among the supported controller options, but support depends on the sport. Do not assume one Joy-Con will work for every sport or every multiplayer arrangement. Check the selected sport’s on-screen instructions for the required controllers. Nintendo’s controller FAQ also lists paired Joy-Con and Joy-Con with a Leg Strap among possible configurations.

How to play without an internet connection
On the game’s mode-selection screen, choose Play Locally. This is Nintendo’s option for playing without communication, on a single console. The player limit is one to four depending on the sport; solo players can face computer opponents. Nintendo Support Japan’s offline-play guidance directs players to Play Locally.
Play Locally is not local wireless play: it does not connect multiple consoles. If you want multiple consoles connected for a local event, Nintendo describes a separate wired LAN setup in its LAN play instructions.

How offline, online, and LAN play differ
| Option | Internet or network | Consoles | Membership |
|---|---|---|---|
| Play Locally | No internet connection needed | One console; one to four players depending on sport | Nintendo Switch Online membership not required for same-console play |
| Play Globally | Internet required, including the trial against computer opponents | Online play | Active Nintendo Switch Online membership required for online play; the trial is available without membership |
| LAN play | Wired local network setup | Multiple consoles | Not stated in Nintendo’s LAN instructions |
Nintendo’s LAN setup guide covers the wired network option. Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch Online support answer says online play requires an active membership and that the membership-free Play Globally trial still needs internet access.
