Kraken is the strongest all-around long-term pick in the February 2026 tier list, while Sea Angel is the better-rounded choice for movement, oxygen, and catching utility. Neither is a universal answer: the best race depends on whether you are progressing, farming, fighting, or trying to stay out of the bubble longer. The rankings below are dated editorial guidance, not an official list or a verified October 2026 meta.

What is the best race in Abyss?

For a single long-term progression pick, Kraken leads the February 9, 2026 Pro Game Guides ranking because its reported bonuses combine weight, experience, cash, and damage that builds as you catch fish. Sea Angel is a strong alternative if you value speed, oxygen capacity, and catching utility more than Kraken’s scaling damage. Game8’s February 20 guide calls Sea Angel the best-rounded race and recommends choices according to progression stage, so the guides differ in emphasis rather than establishing one universal winner.

These are published guide opinions and reported race effects, not official game rankings or independently verified live-game measurements. A March 2, 2026 patch roundup later noted a fix for race cooldown buffs, but that does not show whether the wider race balance changed. Check the in-game race panel before spending rerolls if an exact current stat matters.

#1 Best Overall
Rio Grande Games Underwater Cities New Discoveries Board Game Expansion
  • 1-4 players
  • Ages 14+
  • Playing time: 90+ minutes
  • This is not a A standalone Game. An underwater cities base Game is required to play this expansion.
  • Number Of Players: 1 To 4
Tier Races
S Kraken, Sea Angel
A Vampire Squid, Shark, Crab
B Anglerfish, Spirit, Puffer, Narwhal
C Monkey, Fish, Cyclops
D Poop, Human, Elf, Coral

Game8’s February coverage instead highlights Sea Angel, Kraken, Vampire Squid, Shark, and Spirit, and its separate stage guide recommends Monkey for early progress. That is useful context: a race lower in a general tier list may still suit a particular stage or goal. Game8 also says it does not cover content after the Jungle update.

Best races by goal

Kraken: long-term progression and all-around power

Pro Game Guides reports that Kraken provides +20% weight, +15% XP, and +15% cash. Its damage reportedly increases by 0.04% for each fish caught, up to +50%; the guide says reaching that cap takes 1,250 fish. It also reports a death-triggered passive that restores oxygen and deals area damage, with an eight-minute cooldown. This combination makes Kraken the clearest pick in that guide for players building toward long sessions and sustained progression.

Sea Angel: oxygen, movement, and catching

Pro Game Guides reports +10% speed, +25% oxygen, and +15% cash for Sea Angel. Its reported passives include no extra sprint oxygen cost below 20% oxygen, bonus damage tied to 35% of movement speed, and faster catching-minigame progress as oxygen falls below 50%, capped at 20%. Game8 calls it the best-rounded option, which fits players who want mobility and utility rather than specializing only in damage or experience.

Shark: damage and attack cadence

Pro Game Guides reports +20% damage, a 0.4-second cooldown reduction, and +30% additional damage below 30% oxygen. It also reports 50% less oxygen consumption from tube boost. Shark is the damage-oriented choice in that guide, especially for players who can make use of its low-oxygen condition.

Vampire Squid: oxygen sustain

Crab: defensive Epic alternative

Pro Game Guides reports +15% oxygen, +10% weight, and +10% damage for Crab, along with a 25% chance to absorb incoming attacks. It offers a mix of survivability and straightforward stat bonuses for players who want a defensive alternative among the listed Epic races.

How to choose for your stage of play

  • Early progression: prioritize useful movement or simple bonuses that help you make progress without relying on a conditional passive. Game8’s stage guide names Monkey as its early-game recommendation.
  • Long routes or time outside the bubble: favor oxygen capacity and recovery, making Sea Angel or Vampire Squid relevant options in the February guide snapshot.
  • Combat: consider Shark for its reported damage and cooldown bonuses, or Kraken if you want damage that scales with catches.
  • Farming: compare the specific reward you need. Kraken and Sea Angel both have reported cash bonuses; Kraken also reports an XP bonus.
  • Safer runs: look at oxygen recovery, attack absorption, and other defensive effects rather than ranking alone. Crab and Spirit are examples with reported survival utility.

These are comparisons of the effects reported by the cited guides, not a claim that one race will outperform every other race in every activity. The value of conditional effects depends on whether your route and play style actually trigger them.

What to know before rerolling

Pro Game Guides’ February 2026 guide reports that standard rerolls cost 100 Shards and Lucky Rerolls cost 450 Shards. Those are dated guide-reported prices; the available sources do not establish whether the costs remain current. Verify the displayed price in-game before spending currency.

Race values also differ between the Pro Game Guides list and a separately maintained race database. Do not combine their numbers as if they came from one ruleset. For an exact stat or passive, use the in-game race panel as the practical reference and treat the published tier placements as guidance tied to their stated dates.
