Which Resident Evil game should you play first? Choose by the experience you want: Resident Evil 2 is a strong starting point for survival horror, Resident Evil 7 biohazard puts atmosphere at the center, and Resident Evil 4 is worth considering if action matters most. If you want to follow Ethan Winters’ story into Village, start with Resident Evil 7. These are fit-based recommendations, not an official Capcom ranking.
Which Resident Evil game should you play first?
There is no single best first game for every player. Your genre preference and the platform you own are the most useful starting points. Capcom’s official descriptions support Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 7 biohazard as survival-horror choices, while Resident Evil 4 is a reasonable option for players prioritizing action. The descriptions do not provide standardized difficulty, length, scare-intensity, or gameplay-style ratings, so these recommendations are not numerical rankings.

Best Resident Evil games for beginners
Choose Resident Evil 2 for a survival-horror starting point
Capcom’s history places Resident Evil 2 in Raccoon City during the t-virus outbreak, where Leon and Claire are trying to survive. That clear setup makes it a strong first choice for someone who wants a survival-horror entry without first following Ethan Winters’ story. The recommendation describes its fit, not a claim that it is easier than other games.
Choose Resident Evil 7 biohazard for an atmosphere-first introduction
In Resident Evil 7 biohazard, Ethan’s search for his wife leads him to the Baker residence, which Capcom describes as “a house of unspeakable horrors.” Capcom also calls this Ethan’s first steps into survival horror. Pick it if that isolated, unsettling setting and Ethan’s story are more appealing than the Raccoon City setup.

- For the first time ever in Resident Evil history, players will be able to freely switch between both first- and third-person perspectives throughout the game.
- An Anniversary to Remember: With March 2026 marking the Resident Evil series’ 30-year anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem marks its own milestone in the franchise.
- Pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem are now open, with the bonus of Grace’s costume: Apocalypse. Please note that the picture weapon does not come with the costume, but it can be obtained in-game.
Which Resident Evil games suit survival horror fans?
Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 7 biohazard are both supported by Capcom’s descriptions as survival-horror recommendations, but they offer different story settings and protagonists. Resident Evil 2 follows Leon and Claire amid the Raccoon City outbreak; Resident Evil 7 follows Ethan to the Baker residence. Choose based on which premise interests you more rather than an unsupported claim about which is scarier or harder.
Capcom says the series began in 1996 and describes it as defining survival horror. Its Resident Evil Portal says the series has sold over 100 million copies; the page does not specify a year for that figure. The Portal’s introduction captures the series’ survival stakes with the line, “Live or die: every decision mattered.”

- FEAR COMES HOME -- Fear, combat, exploration, and item management: these are the four pillars of survival horror, a genre that has never been more masterfully executed than in the gameplay of Resident Evil. The horror continues in the ground-breaking Resident Evil 7. Step into the new Isolated View and experience true survival horror in a world created by the all-new RE Engine.
- DEEP IN THE BAYOU - When Ethan Winters opened his inbox, the last thing he expected was to find an email from his wife; she had been missing for three years. The message was simple: "Come get me," and an address in Louisiana. This leads Ethan to a decrepit mansion in the heart of the bayou. The place has a seriously creepy vibe, but Ethan continues his search – until a stranger attacks him and knocks him unconscious. Ethan has no idea what awaits him when he wakes up...for he is now in the clutches of the Baker family.

Is Resident Evil 4 a good choice for action players?
Resident Evil 4 is a consideration if action is your main priority. Capcom’s official lineup confirms the game and lists platforms, but the official materials used here do not establish a detailed comparison of its mechanics or action level against the other entries. Treat this as a preference-based suggestion, not a measured ranking.
Should you play Resident Evil 7 before Village?
If you want the story context for Resident Evil Village, play Resident Evil 7 biohazard first. Capcom describes Village as taking place three years after the Baker House incident and continuing Ethan’s story. If you are choosing only by genre preference rather than narrative continuity, the recommendations above can guide you independently.
