Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →A browser game runs its game code on your device inside a web browser. Cloud gaming runs the game on remote hardware and streams the picture and sound to your device, while sending your controls back over the internet. A cloud game can be played through a browser, so the browser you use does not tell you where the game itself runs.
Where does the game run?
Browser games run locally in the browser
A browser game uses web technologies such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, WebGL and Web Audio to run on your device. The browser is the game’s runtime, and your device does the work of executing the game. Modern web technology can support substantial game experiences; “browser game” does not automatically mean simple or low-performance. MDN’s web game documentation also describes ways games can communicate with servers.
Local execution does not mean a game is necessarily offline. A browser game may need a connection to download content, communicate with other players, or use other server-based features. Some games may continue working offline after loading, but that depends on how each one is built.
Cloud games run remotely and stream to you
With cloud gaming, remote gaming hardware executes and renders the game. The service sends the audiovisual output to your device, which sends your inputs back. Your device acts as the client: it receives and displays the stream rather than running the full game workload itself.

- MOBILE, CLOUD & REMOTE GAMING: Play supported mobile games like Zenless Zone Zero, or stream console and PC games through Xbox Game Pass, Steam Link, Moonlight, and remote play. Enjoy physical controls wherever you play.
- HALL EFFECT STICKS — PRECISE CONTROL: GameSir Hall Effect sensing sticks deliver smooth 360° control for accurate aiming, movement, and camera adjustments. Built for fast-paced mobile games and streamed console or PC titles.
- LIGHTWEIGHT & ERGONOMIC — 135.4G: At just 135.4g, X5 Lite stays lightweight during extended gaming. Ergonomic, laser-engraved textured grips provide a secure, comfortable hold at home or on the go.
- CUSHIONED MEMBRANE CONTROLS — COMFORTABLE & QUIETER: Cushioned membrane buttons and triggers provide comfortable feedback for repeated inputs while keeping operation quieter. Ideal for extended sessions or gaming in shared spaces.
This distinction is about execution, not the launch screen. If you open a cloud gaming service in a browser, the browser is serving as the streaming client; the game is still running remotely.
How the two options compare
| What matters | Browser games | Cloud gaming |
|---|---|---|
| Where the game runs | In the browser on your device; it may also contact servers for online features or content. | On remote gaming hardware, with the result streamed to your device. |
| What the browser does | Runs the game code as its platform and runtime. | May act as the client for viewing and controlling a remotely running game. |
| Device workload | Your device executes the game. Its demands depend on the game and its implementation. | Your device receives and displays a stream; the service supplies the remote game hardware. Exact client requirements vary by service. |
| Internet connection | Needed for multiplayer, server features and content delivery; an offline-capable game may work without a live connection after loading. | Central to play because gameplay is streamed. Connection quality and latency can affect responsiveness and stream quality. |
| Games and access | A format, not one shared catalog or subscription. Individual games may be free or paid. | Availability, catalog, supported devices and access terms depend on the provider and location. |
| Controls | Keyboard, mouse, touch or gamepad support depends on the game. | Supported controls depend on the service and device. Xbox identifies Xbox controllers and verified third-party controllers as options in its setup guidance. |
What does cloud gaming need?
A supported device and browser
Support is provider-specific. Xbox says play on xbox.com requires a supported browser, such as Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome or Safari, and notes that performance is affected by the internet connection, user location, device and other factors. These are Xbox’s service details, not universal requirements for every cloud gaming platform. Check the provider’s current compatibility information for your device and country. Xbox Cloud Gaming

A suitable network
Cloud gaming depends on a continuous stream, so bandwidth alone does not describe the whole experience: latency and connection stability matter as well. NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW requirements recommend wired Ethernet or a router using 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and specify latency below 80 ms from an NVIDIA data center. That is NVIDIA’s service-specific requirement, not an industry-wide cutoff or a guarantee of smooth play. Requirements can also vary by device, browser, resolution and membership tier. NVIDIA GeForce NOW system requirements
A 2024 study presented at IFIP Networking examined GeForce NOW and Xbox Cloud Gaming under constrained network conditions and across client settings, including browser versus native applications. It supports treating network conditions and client platform as variables—not assuming every session behaves the same or using the study as a universal ranking of services. IFIP Networking 2024 study

Which should you choose?
Choose a browser game when local play fits your device and connection
- You want to play a particular web game without joining a provider-specific cloud catalog.
- Your device can run that game comfortably in its browser.
- You want the option of offline play, and the individual game supports it.
Choose cloud gaming when you want remote hardware to run the game
- Your device is supported by the service, even if it is not running the game locally.
- Your connection is stable enough for streaming and responsive controls.
- The game you want is available to you through that provider, and you meet its access terms.
Before deciding, check the exact game, device, controls, location and cost model. A cloud service may have a subscription, other access terms, or support for selected owned games; do not assume all cloud gaming requires the same plan. A controller is optional where supported, not a universal requirement. Xbox’s setup guide lists Xbox and verified third-party controllers as options, but compatibility depends on the service, operating system and device.

Common misconceptions
- “If I play in a browser, it’s a browser game.” Not necessarily. A cloud service can use the browser as a streaming client while the game runs remotely.
- “Browser games are always free, simple or offline.” None of those is guaranteed. Complexity, price and connectivity needs vary by game.
- “Cloud gaming works on any device or connection.” Providers specify supported devices and browsers, and performance depends on setup and network conditions.
