To find where an image has appeared, search it with Google Lens, Bing Visual Search, or TinEye, then open promising matches and check their captions, credits, and links. Reverse image search can uncover earlier indexed copies and likely source pages, but a match—or a service’s “oldest” result—does not prove who created or first published the image.
How to search an image for its source
- Choose a useful version of the image. If it is on a webpage, copy its image URL or use the browser’s image-search option if available. If you have a saved file or screenshot, use that. Google documents uploading, dragging and dropping, and searching by URL; Bing and TinEye also offer several submission methods. Google’s instructions for searching with an image describe its desktop options.
- Run a search with Google Lens. Look for pages containing the same or a similar image, as well as visual matches that may help identify objects or context. Google also provides “About this image” information for some images. Google explains how to use About this image.
- Check Bing Visual Search for another set of results. Bing may show webpages using the image, related images, and other information. Follow any promising result to its page rather than treating the thumbnail or match as proof of origin. Microsoft documents the available inputs and result types in its Bing Visual Search guide.
- Try TinEye to find copies and variants. Its results can be sorted, including by oldest or biggest, and its comparison feature can help inspect matched versions. See TinEye’s FAQs for its search and comparison features.
- Investigate the strongest candidate page. Read the caption and publication context, look for a credit, and follow links to an author, agency, archive, or stock collection. A credited or linked source may offer better provenance evidence than a search-results page.
- If results are weak, change the query and try another service. Search the full image, then consider a clear crop focused on the relevant subject. If you searched by upload, try the image URL, or the reverse. No service in the documentation promises complete coverage of the web, so an empty result does not show that an image has never appeared elsewhere.
What “original source” means in search results
Reverse image search compares your query with material in a service’s index. A match is evidence that the service found a visually similar or identical image; an earlier indexed copy is a result the service has indexed or ranked as older. Neither establishes the image’s creator, its first appearance anywhere, or who holds its rights. TinEye says it does not directly identify copyright owners in its FAQs.
For a source you can describe responsibly, look for a page with a credible publication context, a clear credit, or a traceable link to an author, agency, archive, or stock library. Treat the creator or rights-holder identity as unconfirmed unless the page or another reliable record supports that claim.
Which reverse image search service should you try?
| Service | Useful for | Documented ways to submit an image | Privacy and interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Lens | Objects, similar images, and webpages containing the same or similar image | Upload, drag and drop, or URL in the documented desktop flow | Results are visual-search leads; Google also offers “About this image” context. See Google Search Help and About this image. |
| Bing Visual Search | Webpages using an image, related images, and other information | Upload, paste, URL, drag and drop; camera input on supported devices | Microsoft says submitted photos may be used to improve image-processing services. See its support page. |
| TinEye | Copies and modified versions; sorting results by oldest or biggest | Upload, paste, drag and drop, URL, or browser extension on a web image | TinEye says it does not save or index search images, and does not directly identify copyright owners. See its FAQs. |
There is no universal best service established by these features. The most useful choice depends on whether you need similar visual matches, copies and variants, a different index of webpages, or a particular submission method. Comparing results across services can provide additional leads, not a guarantee that you have found every appearance.

Check privacy before uploading an image
Image-handling statements differ by service. TinEye says it does not save or index submitted search images; Microsoft says photos provided to Bing Visual Search may be used to improve image-processing services. Those statements should not be generalized to other tools or treated as a complete account of every aspect of data handling. Review the service’s current privacy information before submitting sensitive imagery.
