Then prepare a safe workspace and know what to check if the first boot fails.
1. Back up files you cannot afford to lose
Copy important files to an external drive, USB flash drive, or cloud location such as OneDrive, then check that the folders you care about are actually there. A cloud sync may not include every local file, game save, project, or application setting, so verify what is covered. Microsoft describes backup destinations and recovery options in its Windows recovery options.
A Windows restore point is not a substitute for a separate backup of personal files. Nor is a BitLocker recovery key: it can help you unlock an encrypted drive, but it does not restore missing data.
2. Locate your BitLocker recovery key
Check whether BitLocker or Windows device encryption is enabled. If it is, confirm that you can retrieve the recovery key from another device or a separate storage location before opening the PC. Microsoft describes it as a 48-digit key, and a hardware change can cause Windows to request it at startup. Keep the key somewhere you can reach without relying on the upgraded computer; do not store it beside the PC.

Microsoft says its support staff cannot retrieve, provide, or recreate a lost recovery key. See Back up your BitLocker recovery key and the BitLocker overview for ways to check and safeguard it.
3. Check Windows activation before replacing the motherboard
Open Settings > System > Activation and note the current activation status. If your Windows digital license is not already linked to your Microsoft account, link it where that option is available. This can help with reactivation after a hardware change, but it does not guarantee that every license can be transferred.

A motherboard replacement can change the hardware match Windows uses for activation. Microsoft says significant changes such as replacing a motherboard can require reactivation. Review its Windows reactivation guidance before the swap.
4. Verify compatibility using exact model numbers
Do not rely on a part merely being the right general type. Check the manuals and manufacturer support pages for the exact motherboard, processor or graphics card, case, and power supply you own or plan to buy.

For a CPU upgrade
- Find the motherboard’s exact model and revision, then consult its CPU support list.
- Confirm that the board supports the processor generation and check the minimum BIOS version listed for that CPU.
- Determine whether a BIOS update is needed before installation and follow the motherboard maker’s instructions. Do not assume the PC can update itself with an unsupported processor installed.
For a graphics-card upgrade
- Check the specific card maker’s recommended power-supply wattage and required power connectors; do not apply a universal wattage rule.
- Confirm that the card’s length and thickness fit the case and that nearby slots, cables, and cooling components will not block installation or airflow.
- Check the motherboard and card installation instructions. ASUS’s graphics-card installation guide covers the installation process, while the exact dimensions and power requirements must come from your model’s documentation.
If the upgrade also requires a new power supply or other supporting parts, include those in the compatibility and cost check before you buy. Manufacturer guidance, such as MSI’s boot and no-display troubleshooting page, can help you identify system-specific requirements and diagnose problems.
5. Prepare a safe, organized workspace
Use a clean, dry, well-lit surface with room to keep screws and parts organized. A non-carpeted work area helps reduce static risk. Follow the PC, motherboard, and component manuals, since case access and servicing steps differ by model.

- Shut down Windows fully.
- Turn off the power supply’s switch, if it has one, and unplug the power cord before opening the case.
- Follow the component maker’s handling instructions. AMD recommends discharging static with a grounded ESD wrist strap when handling a graphics card; a wrist strap is optional equipment, not a replacement for disconnecting power or following the manual.
- Keep removed screws and cables organized so you can reconnect the system as documented.

Keep the BitLocker key and any recovery media accessible independently of the PC. If the system does not start, check the motherboard’s debug lights or other indicators and consult the exact board manual before changing settings or removing components. A blank display or failed boot does not by itself mean Windows must be reset or reinstalled.

Windows recovery and reinstall options are not interchangeable: some operations can remove applications, settings, or files. Read Microsoft’s recovery options before choosing one. If you do need to reinstall using installation media, understand the consequences described in Microsoft’s reinstall instructions. A major hardware change may also mean Windows needs activation again.
