Check the free-space requirement for the specific game and update—not just the game’s installed size—then reclaim storage through official resource controls and update or repair with the game’s launcher. Update files may need extra room while they are being downloaded or decompressed. If supported cleanup is not enough, adding compatible storage increases capacity; it does not shrink the game.
Why an update can need more space than the installed game
Four different figures can appear in a game’s storage guidance, and they do not mean the same thing:
- Installed size: the space the finished game files occupy.
- Download size: the data the updater needs to fetch. It may differ from the amount ultimately stored.
- Temporary working space: additional room used while files are unpacked or a patch is applied.
- Optional resources: voice packs, chapter assets or other content that a particular game lets you manage separately.
For example, HoYoverse’s Zenless Zone Zero PC storage guidance, updated October 13, 2025, lists a 61 GB final installation and recommends 122 GB of free space before starting: the additional 61 GB is for decompression. It also recommends leaving extra room for future updates and patches. Those figures apply to that game’s stated requirements, not to PC gacha games as a category; check the current requirements and patch notice for each title.
Check what your game and its next update need
Before deleting files or starting a large update, compare the game’s current official storage guidance with the launcher’s update message. Keep the installed footprint, download amount and free-space requirement distinct. A patch download figure alone does not tell you how much temporary room the update needs, nor what the final installed size will be.

- Open the game’s current official system-requirements or support page.
- Check the current version’s patch notice or launcher prompt for update and pre-download requirements.
- Compare those figures with the free space on the drive where the game is installed.
- Leave headroom if possible: future patches can require additional working space.
Old requirements are not a safe substitute for current ones. A historical Genshin Impact PC FAQ listed separate first-install and general reserved-space figures, but those values are outdated and should not be used as current requirements.
Remove optional resources through supported game controls
First look in the game’s own resource-management menus. Some games offer ways to remove optional content; this is title-specific, not a universal feature of PC gacha games.

Zenless Zone Zero: chapter resources and voice packs
HoYoverse’s Zenless Zone Zero resource-management guidance describes a Base Resources mode that downloads mission resources for selected chapters, along with a voice-pack management screen with uninstall controls. Use the controls available in your current game version, since menus and resource policies can change. Downloaded voice packs also affect the space needed for pre-downloads, according to the game’s PC update notice.
Do not delete folders from the game installation by hand to try to remove voice or chapter data. Files may be needed by the game or updater. For incomplete or corrupted files, use the launcher’s verification or repair option instead.

Use the official launcher to update or repair
HoYoverse recommends using the official update tool for Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail and Zenless Zone Zero. Its download-error troubleshooting guidance identifies insufficient storage and incomplete or corrupted downloads among possible causes of failures. It recommends clearing space and verifying files through the launcher; reinstalling is a fallback, not the first cleanup step.
- If an update fails for lack of space, free space on the game’s installation drive and retry through the launcher.
- If a download appears incomplete or files are corrupted, run the launcher’s verification or repair process.
- If the problem persists, check for network restrictions, firewall or antivirus interference, and outdated software or drivers—the troubleshooting article lists these as other possible causes.
Plan pre-downloads around space, not just convenience
Pre-download is a timing feature, not a storage-saving method. Genshin Impact’s PC pre-install notice says players can pre-install while playing and that this reduces the time spent updating resources on first entry to a new version. Zenless Zone Zero’s PC update notice explains how to use HoYoPlay’s Pre-Download control and says players can continue playing during pre-download; it also notes that installed voice packs affect the required pre-download space.

If a pre-download will not fit, check the current game’s instructions before deciding to wait for the update to go live. The available guidance does not establish that waiting will reduce the total space required. If an update stalls, close other disk-heavy tasks and check connection stability before changing or removing game files.

If you are consolidating installations under HoYoPlay, use the launcher’s current scan/associate or manual path-selection option where available. Search-surfaced HoYoPlay FAQ guidance for Honkai: Star Rail says existing resources can be associated through an automatic scan or by selecting the game path manually. It also warns that choosing a deletion option after association can remove resources from both launcher locations.

Follow the prompts on the current launcher screen, then confirm the game starts from the new location before deleting any old source folder. The HoYoPlay FAQ guidance is specific to the described Honkai: Star Rail resource-association process; check the current launcher instructions for your game.
When adding storage makes sense
If supported resource removal and safe cleanup still leave too little room for the game and its updates, a larger drive can add capacity for a PC game library. HoYoverse recommends SSD installation for Zenless Zone Zero PC in its storage requirements. An SSD upgrade does not reduce the amount of space the game’s files occupy.
Before buying or moving a game to another drive, verify that the computer supports the drive’s interface, physical size and form factor, and that a suitable slot is available. Also check whether the game’s launcher supports moving or locating an existing installation. Adding capacity is a broad solution for a crowded library; removing an optional voice pack or chapter resource, where officially supported, targets that game’s own data.
