In World of Warcraft, the basic quest loop is: find a quest giver, accept the task, follow its objectives and map clues, track your progress, then return to turn it in. New characters currently start in Exile’s Reach, where the opening quests introduce these basics. Exact markers and controls can change between updates, so follow the prompts in your installed game if they differ from older tutorials.
Where do you start questing?
Blizzard’s February 25, 2026 new-player guide says a new character begins in Exile’s Reach. The opening sequence introduces movement, talking to non-player characters (NPCs), using starter class abilities, and managing inventory. Follow its quests to learn the basics in context.
That guide says the route after Exile’s Reach continues into Dragonflight story content. After level 10, it says you can continue into Dragonflight or speak with Chromie in a capital city to choose a Timewalking Campaign. These directions reflect the game as described in that dated guide; progression routes may change with later updates. Blizzard’s new-player guide
How do you accept and complete a quest?
Find a quest giver and accept the task
Look for an NPC offering a quest and interact with them. In Blizzard’s older starter walkthrough, a yellow exclamation point marks an available quest. Read the offer before accepting so you know what the game expects. Marker details and controls in that walkthrough are legacy guidance, not a guarantee that every icon works the same way in every current zone. Blizzard’s starter walkthrough

Read the objective and follow its clues
After accepting, check the objective list and map to find the relevant area. Complete the action the quest actually requests: reaching a place, speaking to someone, collecting an item, or defeating a target are different requirements. If the objective summary seems vague, read the full quest text. It may include a condition or clue that is easy to miss in the short objective line. Blizzard’s starter-zone guidance
Track progress on the map and in the quest log
Blizzard’s solo guide describes the map, opened with M, as a snapshot of quests underway, their status, and other objectives. The quest log lets you manage which quests are tracked; a legacy tutorial gives L as the quest-log key, but key bindings can differ. A 2024 interface article describes a quest selector for tracking and additional quest information in the log. Use your game’s current prompts if those keys or menus do not match. Turn in the quest
When the objective is complete, follow an in-field completion prompt if one appears. Otherwise, return to the quest giver. Blizzard’s older tutorial depicts a yellow question mark for a quest ready to turn in, while the newer map interface includes a Turn In category. Blizzard’s interface article
How do you choose which quest to do next?
The map’s categories can help distinguish a main-story task from optional content or a quest that unlocks something important. Blizzard’s 2024 interface description identifies these categories:

Why can’t you unlock or progress a quest?
The quest may have a prerequisite
A marker does not always mean a quest is currently available to accept. Blizzard’s starting-zone tutorial says a silver exclamation point can indicate that a quest requires a higher level or completion of other objectives. Because that explanation comes from a legacy zone guide, treat it as a useful clue rather than a complete account of every current gating rule. Check the quest text, campaign status, map, and any stated prerequisites. Blizzard’s starting-zone tutorial

The objective may require a specific action
If an objective does not update, reread the full quest text and verify that you performed the required action, not merely reached the area or attacked a nearby enemy. Some tasks have extra conditions that are explained in the quest text. If the instruction and current interface still do not line up, use the in-game prompt or help for your version.

Blizzard’s February 25, 2026 new-player guide states that a Free Trial includes playable content through level 20, including level 20 dungeons and quests. Access beyond level 20 requires a subscription or game time, according to that guide. This is a dated access threshold, not a general rule about how quests work; check Blizzard’s current account information for the latest access terms. Blizzard’s new-player guide
