There is no universally best paddle setup: choose actions your game supports and check the controls in-game.
Set up or change your Elite Series 2 paddle assignments
- Connect and turn on the Elite Wireless Controller Series 2. Open the Xbox Accessories app on an Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, or Windows 10/11 PC; Microsoft lists these platforms for the app’s mapping and profile features. See Microsoft’s Xbox Accessories app guidance.
- In the app, choose Configure. Select a profile to edit, or create a profile, then select a paddle in the mapping editor and choose the button or function to assign. Microsoft describes this mapping flow in its Elite controller customization FAQ.
- Name the profile for a game or control style, then save it. Series 2 stores up to three custom profiles in addition to its default profile.
- Open the game, check its controller settings, and test the assignment during a low-stakes moment. If the action is awkward or conflicts with the game’s layout, revise the mapping or the in-game controls.
To switch saved layouts, press the controller’s Profile button to cycle through profiles. The standard Series 2 has four paddles, so you can assign a different supported action to each one.
Choose paddle actions that fit the game
A useful starting point is a frequent action that would otherwise make you lift your thumb from a stick to press a face button. The right assignment depends on the game’s control options and your own habits; Microsoft does not prescribe a single layout for every game.
Shooters and other action games
Consider moving a frequently used action to a paddle if the game lets you bind that action to a button the controller can send. For example, an action that pulls your thumb away from aiming may be a candidate. Check the game’s own bindings and test the result rather than assuming every game will interpret a remap the same way.

Racing games
If a racing game supports manual shifting, a paddle may be a convenient place for a shift input. Microsoft uses manual shifting in Forza Horizon 5 as an example of matching a custom profile to a favorite loadout. Treat that as an example, not a guarantee that every racing game offers the same control scheme.
Controller-button remapping versus keyboard mapping on PC
Ordinary controller remapping assigns a controller function or button to a paddle. Keyboard-key mapping is a separate feature with additional limits: in an August 3, 2023 Xbox Wire article, Microsoft says keyboard input support is game dependent, so a game may offer full, partial, or no support. The same article says keyboard-key mapping over Bluetooth on PC is not supported. Those keyboard-specific restrictions should not be assumed to apply to ordinary controller-button remapping. Check the package before expecting paddles
The standard Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 package includes four paddles. The Series 2 Core package listing includes the controller and thumbstick adjustment tool, but not paddles; Microsoft identifies the Complete Component Pack as a separate customization option. Check the exact package contents before buying if paddles are essential. Compare Microsoft’s Series 2 product and package information.
If you need to remove a paddle, Microsoft’s Elite controller FAQ says to rotate it 90 degrees and pull it straight out. See Microsoft’s Series 2 support FAQ.

Battery life and profile planning
Microsoft’s undated Xbox product page, accessed in 2026, lists battery life of up to 40 hours per charge and qualifies it as varying with usage and other factors. It is a maximum claim, not a guaranteed runtime. Saving layouts for distinct games or control styles can make the controller’s three custom-profile slots easier to use deliberately.
