Portal also has a separate cloud-streaming option for eligible games with PlayStation Plus Premium.

Which option should you choose?
Choose Portal for a dedicated handheld experience
Portal keeps the screen and controls together in one device. Its 8-inch 1080p display is larger than many phone screens, and its integrated controls provide the familiar DualSense layout. In games that support them, haptic feedback and adaptive triggers are available. That makes Portal a straightforward fit if you want a handheld built specifically for PS5 Remote Play rather than assembling a setup around a phone.

It also has the unique option of cloud streaming eligible PS5 games, which can matter when your PS5 is unavailable or you want to play without connecting to it through Remote Play. The service is separate from console Remote Play and requires PlayStation Plus Premium.
Choose a phone if flexibility and reuse matter more
A phone setup makes sense if you already have a compatible device and controller, or want one device that remains useful for calls, apps, and other tasks. Sony’s phone app supports both PS5 and PS4, while Portal Remote Play is for PS5. Phones can connect over Wi-Fi or mobile data, although cellular play can use substantial data.

- Put Your PS5 in the Palm of Your Hand - PlayStation Portal Remote Player gives you access to the games on your PS5 over your home Wi-Fi*, letting you jump right into gaming without needing to play on a TV.

If you need physical controls, a telescopic controller such as the Backbone One – PlayStation Edition is one documented option. Check that the specific phone fits the controller and meets the current OS requirements. Touch controls are also available, but may be awkward for games designed around physical buttons and sticks.
Does Portal perform better than a phone?
There is no cited controlled head-to-head test showing that Portal universally has lower latency or better image quality than a phone-and-controller setup. Both stream gameplay, so the result for a particular player depends on the connection and device conditions rather than a guaranteed win for either category.

Sony’s guidance is at least 5 Mbps for Remote Play and 15 Mbps recommended for a better experience. Sony cautions that the experience varies with the network environment. Home upload capacity, Wi-Fi quality and congestion, distance from the access point, mobile coverage, and device behavior are practical factors that can affect a session; they are not proof of a measured Portal advantage or disadvantage.
Sony warns that “Remote Play uses a lot more data than most video streaming services.” If you play over cellular, check your carrier allowance and potential charges before starting a long session. Sony’s mobile instructions.

What phones and controllers are compatible?
Sony’s US Remote Play overview lists the following minimum OS versions. Compatibility can change, and meeting a listed OS version does not guarantee every phone or controller combination will fit or behave identically.
| Phone or control method | Sony-listed minimum |
|---|---|
| iPhone or iPad with DUALSHOCK 4 over Bluetooth or on-screen controls | iOS 14 |
| iPhone or iPad with DualSense | iOS 14.5 |
| iPhone with Backbone One – PlayStation Edition | iOS 15 |
| Android with touch controls | Android 9 |
| Android with DUALSHOCK 4 over Bluetooth | Android 10 |
| Android with DualSense | Android 12 |
| Android with Backbone One – PlayStation Edition | Android 10 |
These minimums come from Sony’s US compatibility page. Sony’s Android compatibility list currently recognizes only Backbone One – PlayStation Edition for official PS Remote Play, according to Backbone’s compatibility FAQ. Check both Sony’s current list and the controller maker’s compatibility information for your exact device and revision.

What does Portal cloud streaming add?
In November 2025, Sony launched Portal cloud streaming for PlayStation Plus Premium members. Eligible members can stream selected digital PS5 games in their library and compatible games from the catalog without connecting to a PS5 via Remote Play. The games offered vary by country or region and can change over time; a game in your library is not automatically guaranteed to be eligible. Sony’s launch announcement and Portal listing describe the eligibility limits.
This does not make Portal a standalone PS5. It adds a cloud option for selected games, while standard Remote Play still streams from a paired console. Sony states that PlayStation Plus is not required for ordinary Remote Play; Premium applies to Portal cloud streaming. The official phone Remote Play app documentation covers console streaming rather than this Portal cloud catalog.
How to set up phone Remote Play
- Check compatibility. Confirm your phone meets Sony’s OS requirements and that your controller is supported. For a telescopic model, verify the connector, phone dimensions, and exact controller revision.
- Enable Remote Play on the console. On PS5, open Settings > System > Remote Play and turn on Enable Remote Play. For other console setup details, follow Sony’s mobile Remote Play support steps.
- Allow wake from Rest Mode if needed. Enable the relevant network connection and stay-connected options in the PS5’s Rest Mode settings if you want to connect while the console is in Rest Mode.
- Install and sign in. Open the PS Remote Play app on your phone and sign in with the same PlayStation account used on the console.
- Test near the console first. Sony advises confirming that the phone connects successfully near the console before trying from outside the home. This helps distinguish setup or account problems from remote network issues.
For the official app flow and controller instructions, see Sony’s PS Remote Play mobile instructions.
What should you check before buying or traveling?
- For Portal: Confirm you have a PS5 for console Remote Play. If cloud streaming is the deciding feature, check Premium membership, regional availability, and the current eligible game list.
- For a phone: Check the phone’s OS, controller support, physical fit, and whether the controls suit the games you play. A phone remains more flexible, but it does not provide the same integrated screen-and-grip setup as Portal.
- For either setup: Test the home network and consider where you will play. Sony’s bandwidth figures are minimum and recommended guidance, not a promise of performance.
- For mobile data: Review your plan before using Remote Play away from Wi-Fi; Sony cautions that it uses considerably more data than most video-streaming services.
Portal supports wired audio through a 3.5 mm jack and PlayStation Link wireless audio devices, including PULSE Explore earbuds and PULSE Elite headset. Sony’s cited specifications do not establish ordinary Bluetooth audio support, so do not assume a generic Bluetooth headset will connect. Sony’s Portal product page.
