Used PS5 Pro vs. New PS5 Pro: Which Is the Better Deal?

A used PS5 Pro can save money only when the discount, condition, accessories, and seller protections make sense. Compare actual checkout prices and warranty evidence before buying.

A used PS5 Pro is only the better deal if its actual checkout price is meaningfully lower and the seller backs it with credible testing, useful return rights, and a clear account of what is included. As of a price report published October 6, 2026, some new listings were sharply more expensive than others, while GameStop’s refurbished price was reported at $1,399.99. Check live stock and totals before deciding: those reported prices are volatile listings, not guaranteed offers.

What did used and new PS5 Pros cost in the latest reported prices?

In a report published October 6, 2026, Tom’s Hardware observed a refurbished PS5 Pro at GameStop for $1,399.99. The report also found new consoles listed for $899.99 at Sony, GameStop, and Target, but said those listings were out of stock. Other new listings were $1,496.01 at Best Buy and $1,554.99 at Walmart. These were the report’s observations, not a complete market survey or a promise that an offer remains available. Check the report, then verify the seller’s current stock and checkout total.

Offer observed Reported price Availability qualification
Refurbished at GameStop $1,399.99 Observed in Tom’s Hardware’s October 6, 2026 report; confirm current listing and stock.
New at Sony, GameStop, and Target $899.99 Reported out of stock by Tom’s Hardware on October 6, 2026.
New at Best Buy $1,496.01 Listing reported by Tom’s Hardware on October 6, 2026; confirm current price and stock.
New at Walmart $1,554.99 Listing reported by Tom’s Hardware on October 6, 2026; confirm current price and stock.

At $1,399.99, the reported refurbished offer was $500.00 more than the $899.99 new listings, if one of those sold at that price became available. Against the reported $1,496.01 and $1,554.99 new listings, it was nominally cheaper by $96.02 and $155.00, respectively. That narrow gap may not justify accepting uncertain usage, condition, or coverage. Compare the final price after tax, shipping, and mandatory fees rather than relying on a headline price.

Sony’s 2024 launch announcement set the original US MSRP at $699.99. That is historical context, not an October 2026 offer. Sony’s announcement also describes the Pro’s specifications and package contents.

How much cheaper should a used PS5 Pro be?

There is no fixed discount that makes every used console worthwhile. The savings need to compensate for the specific listing’s condition, missing or untested accessories, seller return terms, and whether any manufacturer coverage can be documented. If the used price is close to a new offer with a stronger return path, new is usually the safer value. If a used console is substantially cheaper and the seller provides credible testing and a practical remedy for defects, it may be worth considering.

  • Calculate the real price difference using the checkout totals for both options.
  • Account for missing items or any repair needed to make the used package complete.
  • Give more weight to a seller’s clear return policy and documented testing than to the word “refurbished” alone.
  • Do not treat a sealed marketplace listing as equivalent to a retailer-backed new sale without checking seller identity and recourse.

Does a used PS5 Pro still have a Sony warranty?

Do not assume that buying used starts a fresh Sony warranty. PlayStation’s US warranty terms cover the original purchaser for one year from the original purchase date, and require valid proof of purchase showing that date. A used buyer should ask for the original receipt and check remaining eligibility with Sony. For covered defects, Sony may repair the product or replace it with a factory-recertified product, at Sony’s option. Read the PlayStation 5 warranty terms for the applicable details. Sony’s cited warranty terms also cover Canada; the pricing comparison above is US-centered.

A retailer’s return window, seller warranty, or optional protection plan is separate from Sony’s manufacturer warranty. Terms apply to the exact product and transaction. An older GameStop listing displayed a seven-day money-back guarantee and a general 30-day return statement, but those terms should not be assumed to apply to a current listing. Check the specific GameStop product listing and the terms shown at purchase.

What to check before buying a used or refurbished console

  1. Compare checkout totals. Include tax, shipping, and any mandatory fees for the new and used listings.
  2. Get a condition account. Ask whether the console has been tested and whether repairs, physical damage, unusual noise, overheating, or other faults have been disclosed.
  3. Confirm what is in the box. Sony’s launch announcement lists a 2 TB SSD and a DualSense wireless controller with the system. Check that the used listing includes the controller, power lead, and any other advertised items, and ask whether they work.
  4. Read return terms for this exact sale. Check the return deadline, what qualifies for a refund, and who pays return costs if the console is defective.
  5. Inspect any extra coverage. Confirm whether a retailer warranty or protection plan is included, its duration, and its exclusions; do not confuse it with Sony’s warranty.
  6. Ask for original proof of purchase. A receipt with the original purchase date is needed to assess remaining Sony warranty eligibility.
  7. Arrange a test or a return remedy. If buying in person, ask to test the console. For an online purchase, make sure the seller permits a return if it arrives defective.

Does buying used change what the PS5 Pro can do?

No: new and used consoles are the same model. Sony announced that the PS5 Pro has 67% more GPU compute units and memory 28% faster than the then-current PS5, enabling up to 45% faster gameplay rendering, alongside advanced ray tracing and AI-driven PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). Those figures are Sony’s 2024 claims compared with the then-current standard PS5, not a used-versus-new performance comparison. Sony says PS5 Pro-enhanced features are available only in select games and vary by game. See Sony’s launch announcement for its full qualification.
