For Remote Play, it also needs a PS5. Portal can stream select PS5 games without a PS5 by using cloud streaming, but that requires PlayStation Plus Premium and availability in a supported region. Neither option provides offline gameplay.
How Portal works: Remote Play versus cloud streaming
Portal is a streaming player, not a standalone console: games run on a PS5 or on PlayStation’s cloud service, and video is streamed to the device.

Can you use Portal without a PS5?
Yes, but only for cloud streaming. An active PlayStation Plus Premium membership lets eligible accounts stream select PS5 games directly to Portal without connecting to a PS5 through Remote Play. The game must be included in the current catalog, and the service must be available in your country or region. Sony’s November 5, 2025 announcement describes cloud streaming as access to select PS5 games without a PS5 console for Remote Play.
If you use Remote Play, you do need your own PS5. It must have broadband access and be powered on or in Rest Mode. Portal Remote Play is compatible with PS5, not PS4. PlayStation’s Portal support page lists the console and setup requirements.

Does PlayStation Portal work without Wi-Fi or internet?
No. Both Remote Play and cloud streaming require broadband internet; Portal has no documented offline-play mode. A game installed on your PS5 is not stored on Portal for local play. If the connection drops, streaming cannot continue until the connection is restored.
PlayStation’s general Portal guidance lists broadband Wi-Fi of at least 5 Mbps and recommends a high-speed connection of at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. The support page notes that actual experience depends on network conditions.

Internet speed requirements for cloud streaming
PlayStation’s current cloud-streaming support guidance, accessed in 2026, gives these minimum upload and download speeds:

These are minimum thresholds, not a promise of smooth play. PlayStation says the experience varies with the game and network environment. Check the cloud-streaming support page for current requirements and supported regions.

What to check before using cloud streaming
- Region: Cloud streaming is available only in specified countries and regions; the supported list can change.
- Account and membership: You need an eligible PlayStation account and active Premium membership. Child accounts are not eligible.
- Game catalog: Only select games are available, and eligibility can change. Confirm that the game you want is currently listed.
- Portal software: Update the device and check the current system-software notes. PlayStation lists version 7.0.2 as improving performance and stability; version 7.0.0 added a 1080p High Quality maximum-resolution option for Remote Play and cloud streaming.
