How to Choose Between a Gaming PC and a Console-Style PC

A gaming desktop favors upgradeability and software flexibility; a console-style PC favors a compact, controller-friendly living-room setup. Compare exact games, configurations, and current total cost.

Choose a conventional gaming desktop if you want more control over performance, a broad Windows software environment, and the option to upgrade components. Choose a console-style PC if a compact setup beside the TV and a controller-friendly interface matter more—and your essential games and storefronts work on its operating system. Neither form factor is automatically faster or better value: compare complete systems for the games, resolution, and settings you actually use.

What counts as a console-style PC?

A conventional gaming PC is generally a desktop computer with a standard desktop operating system and room for a range of components. A console-style PC is PC hardware packaged or configured for a living-room setup, often with a full-screen, controller-oriented interface. The category is not one specification: compact models vary in graphics performance, cooling, upgrade access, operating system, storefront support, and included accessories.

Valve describes its Steam Machine as a small-form-factor gaming device running SteamOS. The company says SteamOS is optimized for gaming and supports fast suspend and resume and cloud saves. Valve also describes the device as having a discrete semi-custom AMD desktop-class CPU and GPU and as “roughly six times as powerful as Steam Deck.” That is Valve’s own comparison, not a promise of a particular frame rate across games.

Compare the trade-offs that affect your setup

Decision A conventional gaming PC tends to suit A console-style PC tends to suit What to check
Performance People who want more control over GPU choice, settings, or a higher performance ceiling. People satisfied with the performance target of a specific compact model. Independent results for the exact model, game, resolution, and settings. Form factor alone does not establish performance.
Space and placement People with desk space or room for a larger case. People who want a small device beside a TV. Dimensions, ventilation clearance, cooling, and noise.
Interface People comfortable with desktop navigation and setup. People who prefer a full-screen gaming interface and couch use. Whether setup, launchers, or particular games require a mouse and keyboard.
Compatibility People who need broad Windows software support or multiple storefronts. People whose essential games work on the device’s operating system. Specific games, anti-cheat systems, launchers, and storefronts.
Upgrades People who expect to replace or add components such as a GPU or memory. People willing to keep the hardware fixed or replace the device later. Which parts are user-upgradeable and whether warranty terms constrain changes.
Total cost People comparing parts lists or prebuilt systems against a set budget. People who value a compact integrated package and its included features. Current system price plus any controller, storage, peripherals, or required subscriptions.

These are tendencies, not rules. A powerful compact PC may outperform an entry-level desktop, and upgrade options differ between compact models. Compare actual configurations rather than assuming every device in either category behaves alike.

Check games and storefronts before choosing an operating system

SteamOS is Linux-based. Proton lets many Windows games run on Linux, but compatibility is not universal. A game can fail because of its anti-cheat system, launcher, or other software dependency even when its graphics hardware is capable of running it.

TechRadar’s review describes SteamOS as offering a straightforward gaming interface and an optional Linux desktop mode. It also notes that Epic and GOG are not available in the standard SteamOS experience it reviewed, and that installing Windows is an option for the reviewed device. Do not assume that installing another operating system is effortless or that it preserves the same couch-friendly experience.

PCWorld’s account specifically reports that some games using kernel-level anti-cheat do not run on the Steam Machine, citing Valorant, Destiny 2, and Battlefield 6 as examples at the time of its report. Support can change, so check the current status of each must-play game rather than relying on a broad compatibility percentage or an old list.

Use the Steam Machine as a model-specific example, not a category benchmark

Valve’s official description is: “Steam Machine is a gaming device that enables powerful PC gaming in a small form-factor.” PC Gamer’s 2026 review lists the reviewed Steam Machine with a semi-custom AMD Zen 4 six-core, 12-thread CPU; semi-custom RDNA 3 graphics with 8 GB of dedicated GDDR6 VRAM; 16 GB of DDR5 RAM; and 512 GB or 2 TB storage options.

PC Gamer reported US review-time prices of $1,049 for a 512 GB model without a controller and $1,428 for its reviewed 2 TB bundle with a controller. These are figures from that 2026 review, not guaranteed current prices. PC Gamer highlighted the compact chassis and living-room intent while arguing that a conventional gaming PC could provide better gaming performance for similar money. TechRadar likewise praised the compact design and reported that demanding games can struggle at higher resolutions. Those are reviewers’ assessments of the product and review period, not controlled results for every console-style PC.

Compare complete systems at the same target

  1. Set a target. Name the games you care about and the resolution and settings you expect to use. A comparison is useful only when both systems are being considered for the same workload.
  2. Check compatibility. Confirm each must-play game, anti-cheat system, launcher, and storefront works on the operating system you plan to use.
  3. Compare full configurations. Include the controller, storage capacity, display connection, and any peripherals you still need. A box-only price can hide the cost of completing the setup.
  4. Verify practical fit. For a TV setup, check dimensions, ventilation, noise, and whether initial setup or specific games require a mouse and keyboard. For a desktop, check that the case fits where you plan to put it.
  5. Check the upgrade path and current price. Confirm which components can be replaced and review current manufacturer or retailer listings. Historical review prices are not a live market comparison.

The cited reviews do not provide a controlled benchmark across a representative range of conventional and console-style PCs. That means they cannot establish one universal performance-per-dollar winner. Use independent testing for the exact systems on your shortlist.

Which one should you buy?

Choose a conventional gaming PC if flexibility comes first

  • You want to choose or replace individual components over time.
  • You need broad Windows software support or rely on storefronts and games that may not work in a SteamOS setup.
  • You want to tune performance for particular games and resolutions, and are willing to compare desktop configurations.
  • You also expect to use the computer at a desk for tasks beyond couch gaming.

Choose a console-style PC if the living-room experience comes first

  • You want a compact device that fits beside a TV and prefer navigating games with a controller.
  • Your essential library and storefronts work on the model’s operating system.
  • You are comfortable with the specific device’s performance and upgrade limits after checking its configuration.
  • You value the integrated setup enough to accept the possibility of replacing the whole device rather than upgrading parts.

If you are asking whether a Steam Machine is actually the better choice for you, start with your must-play games and the TV or monitor you intend to use. Then compare its complete, current configuration against a desktop or another compact PC at the same budget. The right choice is the one that meets your software and performance needs without making you pay for flexibility or convenience you do not want.
