Resident Evil Requiem is the scariest entry in this ranking; Resident Evil 2 (2019) is close behind. For difficulty, there is no universal hardest game: on a standard first playthrough, Resident Evil 2 (2019), Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, and the original Resident Evil are the toughest cluster, for different reasons. These are separate editorial rankings, not official Capcom ratings or measured results. The scope is the mainline series, including remakes, through Requiem; spin-offs and bonus modes are excluded. The difficulty assessment assumes a first-time player on the default standard setting, without unlockable gear or prior route knowledge.
How to read these rankings
Scares and challenge do not rise together. A game can create oppressive dread while giving the player manageable combat, or offer demanding resource and combat decisions without being the most frightening. The scare order weighs sustained atmosphere, vulnerability, pursuit, body horror, sudden shocks, and perspective. The difficulty order weighs combat demands, resources, puzzle friction, and save or checkpoint pressure. These are comparison criteria for this list, not Capcom categories.

The order is a practical editorial judgment, not a claim that every player will experience the games identically. Difficulty settings, remake mechanics, control schemes, familiarity with the series, and unlockable modes can all shift the result. The Metacritic list is not a substitute: its ranking is based on Metascore and follows its own rules for selecting platforms, counting substantial remakes, and excluding some releases. Metacritic’s Resident Evil rankings measure review scores, not scares or difficulty.
Scariest Resident Evil games, ranked
This order emphasizes the intensity and persistence of horror on a first playthrough. GamesRadar+’s horror roundup, accessed October 7, 2026, also places Requiem first and gives it a 10/10 scare rating, with Resident Evil 2 Remake at 9/10. Those are that outlet’s judgments, not standardized ratings.
#1 Best Overall
- Return to the series origins - Discover the truth behind what led to the horrors at the Mansion in Resident Evil in this fan-favorite and popular prequel title to the series.
- Completely enhanced visuals - New high-resolution textures have been created from scratch, including 1080p support on next-gen consoles, while still preserving the classic appearance of the original release.
- Fan-favorite Resident Evil characters - Rookie S.T.A.R.S. member Rebecca Chambers and wanted criminal Billy Coen combine skills and buddy up to survive the undead and infected nightmares that await them.
- All original difficulty levels plus new Very Easy Mode for novice players
-
Resident Evil Requiem
At the top for its overall horror impact. GamesRadar+ calls it the series’ scariest entry yet and rates it 10/10 for scares. Treat that as a current editorial endorsement rather than proof of an objective franchise-wide winner.
-
Resident Evil 2 (2019 remake)
Relentless pursuit and a vulnerable-feeling trip through Raccoon City make the remake an especially strong choice for sustained tension. GamesRadar+ rates it 9/10 for scares; GameSpot likewise highlights the remake’s scares in its best-games coverage. It may be the better starting point for players who want classic survival-horror structure with modern presentation.
Rank #2
Resident Evil Triple Pack - Nintendo Switch- Play anywhere: play Resident Evil Triple Pack on the go using the Nintendo Switch system's handheld or at home in tabletop mode.
- Two-player local and online co-op: experience Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6 locally or online with a friend.
- Game enhancements: includes a variety of game improvements for both Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6.
- Includes map packs, special costumes, plus the game modes from Resident Evil 4, 5, and 6.
-
Resident Evil 7: Biohazard
Its first-person view makes close encounters feel immediate, and its horror stays uncomfortably intimate. GamesRadar+ specifically emphasizes that closeness. It can be an even more unnerving choice than RE2 for players who find first-person horror particularly intense.
-
Resident Evil Village
Village mixes action-forward stretches with memorable horror set pieces, so its fear is less consistently sustained than the top three. It remains a strong pick for players who want variety rather than uninterrupted dread.

Resident Evil Origins Collection - Nintendo Switch- Return to the series origins - Discover the truth behind the horrors in the Resident Evil mansion, as well as what led up to them, in these titles which mark the beginning of the Resident Evil timeline.
- Relive the classic horror in either its original settings or modified to modern-day standards
- Play as Albert Wesker in Resident Evil 0 - After completing the main campaign, players will be able to take control of the fan-favorite series antagonist, complete with his Uroboros powers from Resident Evil 5, to wreak havoc in the all new Wesker Mode
- Play Anywhere: Play Resident Evil Origins Collection on the go using the Nintendo Switch system's handheld or tabletop mode
-
Resident Evil (2002 remake)
The mansion’s constrained spaces, quiet exploration, and threat of running short on supplies create slow-burn unease. Its fixed-camera presentation and deliberate pacing can feel less immediately intense than newer games, but its atmosphere rewards patient players.
-
Resident Evil 4 (2023 remake)
Its dangerous encounters and body-horror imagery can be frightening, but the more action-focused rhythm makes it less persistently oppressive than RE2 or RE7. Players seeking combat tension more than prolonged helplessness may rank it higher.
Rank #4
Resident Evil Origins Collection (PS4)- Return to the series' origins
- Enhanced visuals
- remastered sound effects
- Wesker mode
-
Resident Evil 3 (2020 remake)
Nemesis creates sharp pursuit pressure and sudden danger, but the brisker, more action-heavy campaign gives that tension less room to build than RE2. It is a good fit for players who want chase-driven scares in a shorter-feeling experience.
-
Resident Evil 5
Co-op and action-oriented combat reduce the isolation that drives the series’ most frightening entries. Its horror imagery and pressure can still land, especially when playing alone, but it is generally a weaker pick for someone prioritizing scares.

Resident Evil 4 - PS5- Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
- Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
- Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
- Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.

Resident Evil 6
Its action-heavy design, frequent combat, and multiple campaign styles make it the least consistently frightening mainline entry here. It may still provide intense moments, but it is not the natural choice for an atmosphere-first playthrough.
Hardest Resident Evil games on a standard first playthrough
This is a grouped editorial assessment rather than a precise universal ladder: no comparable franchise-wide difficulty measurement is established. The games below challenge different skills, and the player’s control familiarity or chosen setting can change their relative order.
- Resident Evil 2 (2019 remake): Limited ammunition and healing, route planning, and pressure from persistent threats can make each detour costly. It is especially demanding for players who explore inefficiently or expect to defeat every enemy.
- Resident Evil 7: Biohazard: Close-range encounters and restricted resources amplify mistakes. First-person aiming can make combat more challenging for players unused to that perspective.
- Resident Evil (2002 remake): Inventory limits, backtracking, puzzle friction, and the consequences of resource use make it a demanding survival-horror experience. Its older fixed-camera controls can add friction for newcomers.
Other entries trade those pressures for different tests. Resident Evil 4 (2023) often asks for more combat precision and crowd control; Village shifts between exploration, combat, and set pieces; Resident Evil 3 (2020) is comparatively action-forward. These distinctions explain why declaring one game the hardest without naming a mode and player profile is misleading.
Which one should you play first?
- For the strongest current scare pick: choose Resident Evil Requiem, with the caveat that the 10/10 judgment belongs to GamesRadar+.
- For tense survival horror and a broadly accessible modern starting point: choose Resident Evil 2 (2019 remake).
- For close, first-person horror: choose Resident Evil 7: Biohazard.
- For classic, slow-burn survival horror: choose Resident Evil (2002 remake).
- For more action mixed with horror: choose Resident Evil 4 (2023 remake) or Village.
Capcom’s guide to choosing a first or next game lists Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, and Resident Evil Village as having VR versions; VR can make horror more immediate, but availability depends on the specific title and platform. See Capcom’s Resident Evil guide for its published platform guidance. Match any purchase to the exact edition and platform you own, and check the current store listing.

Capcom says Resident Evil began in 1996 and describes its core as “Battling overwhelming fear, solving mysteries, and surviving by any means necessary—that’s the essence of the Resident Evil series.” The line comes from Capcom’s Online Integrated Report 2025, which reported more than 170 million units sold as of March 31, 2025. That is a dated series-wide figure, not a current October 2026 total. The series’ own focus on fear and survival helps explain why scare intensity and mechanical difficulty deserve separate rankings.
