How to Choose the Right Size and Resolution for an OLED Gaming Monitor

Choose OLED monitor size around your seating distance and games; balance 1440p’s performance headroom against 4K’s higher pixel density.

Choose monitor size around your usual seating distance and the games you play; choose resolution around the sharpness you want and the frame rate your PC or console can sustain. For close-seated competitive play, 27-inch 1440p is a strong high-refresh option. For finer detail, desktop use, or supported console gaming, consider 27- or 32-inch 4K. Neither size nor resolution is best for everyone.

Start with your seating distance and the games you play

A screen should fit your desk and viewing position: you want to see the action comfortably without repeatedly turning your head or struggling to take in the whole image. There is no universal distance rule, so use your normal gaming posture and the room you have as the guide. RTINGS discusses the relationship between viewing distance and screen size in its Monitor Size Guide.

Competitive games and close seating

A 24–27-inch display is often easier to scan at a glance when you sit close and need to follow action across the screen. If your priority is a high refresh rate and your graphics card would struggle to deliver high frame rates at 4K, 1440p can leave more performance headroom.

Immersive single-player, racing, and ultrawide play

A larger screen can make a game feel more enveloping, and an ultrawide can add horizontal view in games that support it. Check support game by game before choosing an ultrawide: RTINGS notes that consoles covered in its gaming-monitor guide do not support ultrawide signals. PC game support can also vary.

Understand what resolution changes

Resolution is the number of pixels in the image. In the monitor examples here, “4K” means 3840 × 2160; 1440p means 2560 × 1440. A 4K display has 8,294,400 pixels, or about 8.3 megapixels, according to RTINGS’ monitor-resolution test.

More pixels can show finer image detail, but the graphics card has more work to do when rendering at a higher resolution. That can make it harder to maintain a high frame rate, particularly in demanding games. RTINGS explains the resolution and gaming-monitor trade-offs in What To Look For In A Gaming Monitor.

Compare pixel density at 27 and 32 inches

Size alone does not determine sharpness. Pixel density, measured in pixels per inch (PPI), depends on both a screen’s diagonal size and its resolution. RTINGS’ published figures make the trade-off clear:

Screen size Resolution Pixel density Practical implication
27 inches 2560 × 1440 109 PPI (RTINGS; publication date not stated, page crawled October 7, 2026) Lower density than 27-inch 4K, while asking the GPU to render fewer pixels.
27 inches 3840 × 2160 (4K) 163 PPI (RTINGS; publication date not stated, page crawled October 7, 2026) More pixels per inch than 27-inch 1440p; fine text and image detail can look clearer.
32 inches 2560 × 1440 93 PPI (RTINGS; publication date not stated, page crawled October 7, 2026) Lower density than 32-inch 4K.
32 inches 3840 × 2160 (4K) 138 PPI (RTINGS; publication date not stated, page crawled October 7, 2026) A larger image than 27-inch 4K, with higher density than 32-inch 1440p.

These PPI values are published by RTINGS, whose source page does not state an original publication date. RTINGS describes density as a major factor in image and text clarity, writing: “The pixel density is one of the main factors behind how clear images and text appear on the monitor.” Higher density can make interface text appear smaller; display scaling may help if you use the monitor for desktop work as well as games. RTINGS gives greater than 100 PPI as its “Good value” reference and 25 PPI as a noticeable difference in its resolution-test section. Treat those as that publisher’s reference points, not universal perceptual thresholds.

Choose between high-refresh 1440p and detailed 4K

These example monitors illustrate two common routes. Their listed specifications are not a promise of current availability, and they are examples rather than blanket recommendations.

Example Listed size and resolution Listed refresh rate Why it may fit

Dell Alienware AW3225QF (RTINGS) 32 inches; 3840 × 2160; OLED/QD-OLED 240 Hz A larger 4K example; RTINGS says a more powerful computer is needed to drive 4K at its maximum refresh rate. Source: RTINGS comparison.
LG 32GS95UE-B (RTINGS) 31 inches; 3840 × 2160; OLED/WOLED Up to 480 Hz; the RTINGS comparison describes a 4K at 240 Hz mode A dual-mode example. Check the manufacturer’s current specifications for the resolution and refresh-rate combinations before buying. Source: RTINGS comparison.

The refresh-rate figure alone is not enough for a dual-mode model: confirm which resolution reaches which refresh rate. Also check your GPU’s ability to output your chosen resolution and refresh rate together. The model comparisons above were updated in 2026, but current inventory and pricing are not established here.

Account for console and ultrawide compatibility

If you play on console

A 27- or 32-inch 4K OLED may suit a console setup if the console and the game support the output mode you want. Before purchase, verify the exact console, game, connection, and monitor specifications; a monitor’s maximum resolution or refresh rate does not by itself confirm that your complete setup can use that combination.

If you want an ultrawide

Consider one for supported PC games when a wider field of view and immersion matter more than a conventional screen shape. If you also plan to connect a console, check its supported signal formats first; the consoles in RTINGS’ cited guide do not support ultrawide signals.

Make the choice in five checks

  1. Measure your setup: Consider your normal seating distance, desk depth, and whether you can comfortably take in the entire screen.
  2. Set your priority: Favor a 24–27-inch screen for close-seated scanning and competitive play, or consider a larger display for immersion and desktop space.
  3. Pick a resolution: Compare 1440p’s lighter rendering load with 4K’s higher pixel density at the size you want.
  4. Check your system: Confirm that your PC or console can output the resolution and refresh rate you expect in the games you play.
  5. Verify the exact monitor modes: Check current manufacturer specifications for native resolution, refresh rate, and any separate resolution/refresh combinations on dual-mode models.
