Start with the symptom and any error code on screen, then try the least disruptive checks first. Confirm cables and settings before opening Safe Mode, and avoid reset or reinstall options unless you understand that they can erase data.
Start with the symptom and error code
PS5 error codes can point to different problems, including network or server connections, system software updates, games and apps, discs, and storage. Look up the exact code in PlayStation’s PS5 error-code index before trying a general fix. The code can help distinguish a console problem from an account, service, or connection issue.
If the problem persists after the relevant checks and official instructions below, use PlayStation’s Safe Mode guide or Safe Mode troubleshooting guide as appropriate, then visit PlayStation Repairs for diagnostics and service options. A symptom alone does not establish that the console has a hardware fault.
PS5 has a blank screen or Safe Mode does not appear
Check the display connection first
- Make sure the PS5 is powered on and the TV is set to the HDMI input connected to the console.
- Reseat the HDMI cable at both the TV and console ends.
- If the picture is still missing, try another HDMI cable if available. Change one cable at a time so you can identify whether a connection was the cause.
Sony lists an improperly connected HDMI cable among possible reasons Safe Mode may not display. If Safe Mode will not launch, it also recommends trying another USB, HDMI, or power cable. See Sony’s Safe Mode troubleshooting steps.

Enter Safe Mode and adjust video output
- Turn the console off by holding the power button for three seconds.
- After it is off, press and hold the power button again. Release it after the second beep, which Sony says sounds about seven seconds after the first.
- Connect the controller to the console with a USB cable and press the PS button.
- In Safe Mode, choose Change Video Output to try a different resolution or HDCP setting.
PlayStation describes Safe Mode as a way to start the console “with only the most basic functions active.” Read the available options in Sony’s Safe Mode guide before choosing one.
If Safe Mode still will not start
Hold the power button until the console beeps and turns off. Disconnect the power cable for 20 minutes, reconnect it, and try again. If Safe Mode remains unavailable, follow Sony’s troubleshooting guide or contact PlayStation Repairs.

PS5 will not connect to the internet or PlayStation services
- Check whether other devices on the same network can access the internet.
- Check PlayStation service status through PlayStation Connectivity Support.
- On PS5, open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection, choose a connection type, and enter the network security information if prompted.
- Look up the exact error code in Sony’s PS5 error-code index.
Connection errors can involve the local network, a server, sign-in credentials, or account restrictions. A PlayStation service outage is not, by itself, evidence of a console defect.
PS5 system software update fails
Try the normal update route
If you can reach the home screen, go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings, then check for and install an update. If an update failed over Wi-Fi, Sony says connecting the console to the router with a LAN cable may help. Follow the current instructions in PlayStation’s PS5 setup guide.

Update through Safe Mode or USB
If the home screen is unavailable, Safe Mode includes a system software update option. Sony also documents a manual update route using a PC or Mac, a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, and a controller connected by USB. Follow Sony’s current folder and file naming instructions exactly in its Safe Mode system software update guide.
Do not choose Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) as a routine update fix: Sony says this option deletes all user data. Back up first where possible, and check the on-screen description so you select the intended update option.

PS5 has startup, storage, or system-feature trouble
Safe Mode has several maintenance options with different purposes and data consequences. Check the on-screen description before confirming an action.
| Safe Mode option | What it is for | Data impact stated by Sony |
|---|---|---|
| Repair Console Storage | Try when the PS5 does not start properly or has storage issues. | Does not erase data. |
| Clear Cache and Rebuild Database: Clear System Software Cache | Try for system-feature problems or performance drops. | Not stated in Sony’s guide. |
| Clear Cache and Rebuild Database: Rebuild Database | Scans the drive and recreates the content database; Sony notes it can help when a deleted game icon remains on Home. | Not stated in Sony’s guide. |
| Restore Default Settings | Restores default settings. | Preserves console content. |
| Reset PS5 | Resets the console. | Deletes user data. |
| Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) | Resets the console and reinstalls system software. | Deletes user data. |
These options and their descriptions are listed in PlayStation’s Safe Mode guide. If an error code appears, check it in the PS5 error-code index before assuming a database rebuild is the right response.

A game or app crashes or shows an error
Use the exact code shown rather than applying one remedy to every crash. For CE-108262-9, which Sony identifies as a system or software data error, its instructions include updating system software. If the code appears after starting a game or app, Sony also recommends deleting and reinstalling that game or app and using Safe Mode’s cache and database options. Follow the steps in Sony’s CE-108262-9 support guide, and check the error-code index for other codes.
PS5 will not read a disc
Disc-reading issues have their own troubleshooting steps. Use Sony’s guide to disc issues on PS5 rather than trying network or download fixes. Follow the guide’s directions for any Safe Mode steps or repair escalation.
When to contact PlayStation Repairs
If the relevant cable, network, update, or symptom-specific steps do not resolve the problem, use PlayStation Repairs for diagnostics and service options. Do not open the console based on a symptom alone; the official troubleshooting steps do not establish a hardware fault without further diagnosis.
