Kingdom Hearts is an action role-playing game series from Square Enix, directed by Tetsuya Nomura. It blends Disney worlds and characters with an original, ongoing story about Sora, a Keyblade wielder who travels with Donald Duck and Goofy to confront the Heartless and help restore peace. Its story grows well beyond that starting premise, and its numbered titles do not represent every installment in the series.
What happens in Kingdom Hearts?
The series begins with Sora’s world under threat. He gains the Keyblade, a weapon tied to the worlds’ safety, and journeys through Disney settings alongside Donald and Goofy. Their struggle against the Heartless gives the first adventure a clear goal, while the wider story gradually develops its own mythology around hearts, darkness, Keyblade wielders, and characters connected to Sora. Square Enix’s series overview presents the conflict as an effort to stop the Heartless’ invasion and restore peace.

Disney characters and locations are part of the appeal, but Kingdom Hearts is not simply a sequence of separate Disney adventures. Its original characters and continuing plot connect the games, and events in one entry can matter in later ones. The story becomes more intricate as the cast and mythology expand.
Is Sora the only main character?
No. Sora is the best-known central character, but other Keyblade wielders and companions are important to the larger story. For example, the Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep Final Mix manual introduces Terra, Ventus, and Aqua as trainees of Master Eraqus, amid a crisis connected to Master Xehanort’s disappearance. That entry looks to events and characters beyond Sora’s usual journey.

As the official manual puts it, “Long before Sora is chosen by his Keyblade, the worlds’ safety lay in the hands of others known as the true Keyblade Masters.” This is one reason the series’ chronology and cast can feel larger than the title numbering suggests.
Why don’t the game numbers tell the whole story?
The main numbered releases are only part of the continuing narrative. Other entries explore earlier events, follow different characters, or connect important story developments between numbered games. Some also use gameplay systems that differ from the standard action-RPG feel: the Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX manual, for instance, describes Re:Chain of Memories as an RPG in which Sora uses cards during his journey through Castle Oblivion.

Collections can also bundle games and story presentations together. Square Enix calls KINGDOM HEARTS -HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX- a collection of the first six stories, but that phrasing does not mean the package contains six separately playable games. Check the product’s contents to see which entries are playable and which are presented in another format.
Where should a beginner start?
A practical route is to begin with the earliest main collection entry available for your platform, then follow the collection’s sequence. This is a straightforward editorial starting point, not an official universal order prescribed by Square Enix. Since the games form a continuing story, playing in release or collection order is a useful way to encounter the plot without trying to reconstruct its chronology in advance.

- Find the collection for your platform. Square Enix’s KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I~III] page describes the series arc and identifies KINGDOM HEARTS III + Re Mind as its culmination.
- Check what the edition actually includes. Confirm the named games, any story presentations, platform, territory, and whether the edition is physical or digital.
- Continue through the included entries in sequence. You can follow the collection order first and explore alternate chronology or character-focused entries later if you want more context.
Square Enix announced that the series would launch on Steam on June 13, 2024, describing the games from the original through KINGDOM HEARTS III + Re Mind as the Dark Seeker Saga. That announcement is a dated platform milestone, not confirmation that a particular edition is currently available in every region. See the Steam launch announcement, then check your local storefront for current availability and contents.

There is no single collection or format to assume will suit every player. Before purchasing, compare the actual edition listing against what you want to play and where you play:
- Story coverage: Which named games or story presentations are included?
- Gameplay: Can you play each included entry, or is some story delivered as a presentation?
- Platform and territory: Is that edition currently offered for your device and region?
- Format and availability: Is it a physical or digital product, and is it in stock or listed locally?
Square Enix’s collection page is a helpful place to identify relevant bundles, but storefront contents, formats, pricing, and stock can change. Verify the exact edition on the retailer or platform store before buying.
