At Sony’s U.S. recommended prices effective April 2, 2026, the PS5 Pro costs $899.99, compared with $649.99 for the disc-equipped standard PS5—a $250 premium. The Pro is most compelling if you have a 4K display and play games with enhancements you care about; the standard PS5 is the better value if price or included disc playback matters more. Sony also lists the disc-free PS5 Digital Edition at $599.99.

What the extra $250 gets you
The Pro’s main difference is its capacity for enhanced graphics and performance in compatible games—not a separate game library. Sony’s current Pro page lists more than 100 enhanced PS5 titles, a catalog that can change. Check whether the games you actually play are among them before paying the premium.
Sony says supported games can run at 60fps or up to 120fps with 4K output, ray tracing, and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), an AI-driven upscaling feature. These are options for compatible titles, not a promise that every game runs at 4K and 120fps or receives a visible upgrade. Sony says Pro features vary by game.
#1 Best Overall
- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
At the Pro’s September 2024 announcement, Sony described its GPU as having 67% more compute units than the then-current PS5, its memory as 28% faster, and rendering as up to 45% faster. Those are Sony’s manufacturer comparisons, not independent benchmark results.
Storage, discs, and compatibility
Built-in storage
Sony lists 2TB of built-in SSD storage for the Pro, versus 1TB for the standard disc PS5 and 825GB for the Digital Edition. Available space is lower than the advertised capacity because some is reserved for system software and other functions. More capacity can mean fewer installed games need to be removed to make room for new ones.
Disc playback
The Pro is digital-only out of the box. Sony’s removable Disc Drive is compatible, but sold separately; pairing it with the console during setup requires an internet connection. Factor the drive and setup requirement into the total cost if you own game discs, Blu-ray movies, or DVDs. By contrast, disc playback is included with the standard disc PS5; the less expensive Digital Edition has no drive.

- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
PS4 and PS5 games
Sony says the Pro plays PS5 games and more than 8,500 PS4 games, with a small number of PS4 titles incompatible. Game Boost may stabilize or improve performance for supported PS4 and PS5 games, but Sony does not guarantee an improvement for every title.
Who should buy the PS5 Pro?
- Choose the Pro if you have a 4K display, play games Sony identifies as Pro-enhanced, and value the possible image-quality or frame-rate improvements enough to pay more.
- Consider the Pro if you want 2TB of built-in storage or have a compatible Wi-Fi 7 router and value that connectivity. Online performance still depends on your network and the game.
- It can suit an existing PS5 owner who wants enhancements in games they already play; you do not need to buy a new library to use it.
For buyers whose main draw is improved visuals or frame rates, the key question is whether their regular games support the features. The Pro’s label alone does not guarantee a meaningful change in every game.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who should buy the standard PS5?
- Choose the standard disc PS5 if you want physical-disc playback included or want to spend $250 less than the Pro at Sony’s U.S. recommended prices.
- Consider the Digital Edition if you do not need a disc drive and want the lowest of these three recommended prices; it is $300 less than the Pro.
- Stick with the standard model if your priority is playing PS5 games at lower cost, or if the specific games you play are not ones you expect to benefit from Pro enhancements.
Sony describes Pro features as game-specific enhancements, while positioning both consoles within the PS5 platform. The standard PS5 is not obsolete simply because the Pro exists.
Quick Recap
How to decide whether the Pro is worth it for you
- Look up your most-played games on Sony’s PS5 Pro feature page and check whether they are identified as enhanced. The list can change.
- Check your display and network. A compatible 4K display is relevant to the Pro’s visual features; Wi-Fi 7 benefits require a compatible router.
- Add up the configuration you need. Compare the Pro’s $899.99 U.S. recommended price with the standard disc PS5 at $649.99 or Digital Edition at $599.99. If you need disc playback with the Pro, include the separately sold drive in your budget.
- Weigh storage and physical media. The Pro has more built-in SSD capacity, while the standard disc model includes a drive. Decide which advantage you will use more often.
