Nintendo Switch, PS5, or Xbox: Which Console Offers the Best Value for Your Game Library?

The best-value console depends on the games you own and want, whether they work in your format, and what you expect to spend on hardware and subscriptions.

There is no universal best-value console: the strongest choice is usually the one that plays the games you already own and the games you most want, at a total cost you are comfortable paying. Compare specific titles, hardware and disc needs, and any subscription you expect to keep—not just the size of a game catalog.

Start with the games that matter to you

Write down two short lists before comparing platforms: games you already own and want to keep playing, and games you are likely to buy or play next. Check each title against the candidate console and, for older games, confirm the exact version and format. A familiar franchise or a large library headline is not a substitute for confirming the games themselves.

  • Already-owned games: note whether each copy is a cartridge, disc, or digital purchase, and whether it works on the console you are considering.
  • Must-play games: identify the particular current or upcoming titles that would influence your purchase. Their availability can matter more than a service’s total catalog count.
  • Preferred access: decide whether you want to own games outright, play through a rotating subscription catalog, or use both approaches.

Compare the three subscription approaches

Subscriptions can reduce the need to buy some games separately, but access to a catalog is conditional, not permanent ownership. Compare the titles you would actually play and how long you expect to subscribe.

Nintendo Switch Online

Nintendo Switch Online adds online play in compatible games, cloud-save backup for supported games, and a curated selection of classic games. Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack adds further classic-game libraries and selected DLC while membership remains active; benefits differ by system. See Nintendo’s membership and benefit details.

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

Nintendo’s US support page lists these 12-month prices: $19.99 for an individual standard membership, $34.99 for a standard family membership, $49.99 for an individual Expansion Pack membership, and $79.99 for a family Expansion Pack membership. The standard individual plan is also listed at $3.99 for one month or $7.99 for three months. These are US prices from Nintendo’s page accessed in 2026; prices vary by country and duration. Check Nintendo’s current price page for the option and region that apply to you.

PlayStation Plus

PlayStation Plus has Essential, Extra, and Premium tiers. Extra includes the Game Catalog; Premium adds the Classics Catalog, game trials, and cloud streaming. Sony says catalog availability varies by tier and over time, so look up specific games in the current US PlayStation Plus plan information before counting them as part of your value calculation.

Nintendo Switch with Neon Blue and Neon Red Joy-Con - Handheld Gaming Console
  • 6.2” LCD screen
  • Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
  • Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
  • Detachable Joy-Con controllers
  • Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends

For cloud streaming, Sony’s support page specifies a broadband connection of at least 5 Mbps, and at least 15 Mbps for 1080p streaming when the game supports 1080p. Streaming has its own limitations and is not necessarily interchangeable with downloading a game or playing a disc. See Sony’s catalog and streaming requirements.

Xbox Game Pass

Xbox’s US Game Pass pages advertise 500+ games for Ultimate, 200+ for Premium, and 50+ for Essential across supported platforms. These are publisher-reported counts, and plan features, game availability, counts, and supported platforms can change by region and over time. A game is available only while it remains in the catalog and the subscription is active. Check Xbox’s current plan details and verify the games you want rather than treating a headline count as a permanent collection.

Check compatibility and physical-game support

An existing library adds value only if the games work on the new system in the format you own. Xbox states that Series X|S supports select Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox games. Compatibility is title-specific, so check the Xbox backward-compatibility list for every older game you want to play.

Series S is digital-only and cannot play physical discs. If you own Xbox discs, that model will not let you use them. For other console models, confirm disc support before buying and check whether the specific game is compatible. The existence of backward compatibility does not mean every previous-generation game works.

Estimate the total cost over your ownership period

Choose a realistic period—such as the number of years you expect to keep the console—and compare like with like. Include the costs you are actually likely to incur, not every possible subscription or purchase.

  1. Hardware: record the price of the specific console model you would buy in your region, including whether it has a disc drive if you need one.
  2. Games: estimate the purchases you expect to make outside a subscription. Count a catalog game as a potential saving only if it is one you would otherwise buy and you expect to play it while it is available.
  3. Membership: add the subscription fees for the plan and period you realistically expect to maintain. For Nintendo’s US annual prices, use the relevant individual or family tier; compare local prices for other regions.
  4. Access trade-offs: account for disc compatibility, digital-only access, and broadband requirements if streaming is part of your plan.

There is no neutral cross-platform measure that turns different catalog counts, plan benefits, and hardware into a single reliable value score. The useful comparison is your likely spend for the games and access you will actually use.

Nintendo Switch – Neon Red and Neon Blue Joy-Con (Renewed)
  • One player can use a Joy-Con in each hand
  • Two players can each take one
  • Multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options (additional Joy-Con sold separately)
  • Slip a set of Joy-Con into a Joy-Con grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.

Which console is best if you already own a lot of games?

Favor the system that supports the largest share of the games you care about in the format you own—but verify the titles individually. A physical collection may rule out a digital-only option; a digital library may still depend on account access and platform compatibility. If most of your existing games do not transfer or run on a candidate console, treat them as sunk purchases rather than as value the new system provides.

Is a subscription worth it if you buy most of your games?

It may be, if the relevant catalog contains several games you would otherwise purchase and you will play them during the membership period. It is less compelling if you prefer to keep games permanently, play only a few titles, or would maintain the plan mainly for games that may leave the catalog. Compare the cost of the membership period you expect to use with the specific purchases it could replace, while remembering that catalog access ends when a title leaves or your subscription expires.
