Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMicrosoft does not publish a current universal maximum for the storage slider in retail Xbox Developer Mode. A community-reported path to it is Dev Home menu → Manage dev storage, but first identify what is actually full: development-file allocation, an app’s writable data, a save quota, and other local storage areas are different things.
Is there a maximum Dev Mode storage allocation?
No verified public Microsoft specification establishes the current maximum for the retail-console Manage dev storage slider. Do not treat numbers in forum titles or replies as an official limit; they describe individual users’ experiences, not a documented universal cap.
Microsoft’s public [UWP FAQ] describes Dev Home and how to switch modes, but does not document this slider or its limits. The underlying Microsoft storage documentation covers developer-facing storage categories, which should not be mistaken for the retail slider’s capacity.
How to find and adjust the reported storage control
The control path below comes from a community report, not a Microsoft-published procedure. Menu names and behavior may vary by console software version.

- Confirm you are in Developer Mode. Press the controller’s Home button. Microsoft says Dev Home appears in Developer Mode; the retail home experience indicates Retail Mode. See the Microsoft UWP FAQ.
- Open Dev Home’s menu and look for Manage dev storage. A community post reports that this opens a slider for the development-storage allocation: “Development files storage capped at 5 gigs, why?”. Check the wording shown on your console rather than assuming the path is unchanged.
- Check the storage area named in the warning before moving the slider. The allocation may not govern every app’s writable data. The available sources do not establish that resizing changes all storage locations.
- Make the change and follow any on-screen confirmation or restart prompt. Microsoft’s public documentation reviewed here does not guarantee that resizing preserves installed apps or data in every console and software version. Do not assume the operation is lossless.
Which Xbox storage limit are you encountering?
Xbox storage is not one interchangeable bucket. Microsoft’s GDK local storage documentation describes four categories accessible to Xbox One titles. These are developer-facing concepts and do not specify the retail Dev Home slider’s maximum.
| Storage area | What Microsoft documents | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Temporary local storage | 2 GB of dedicated storage for a title; contents may be deleted after the title ends. Microsoft’s Local storage page does not display a publication date. | This is not the Dev Home development-files allocation. |
| Installed game data | Listed as a distinct local storage type for Xbox One titles. | The cited page does not define a universal Dev Home slider limit. |
| Developer scratch partition | Identified as development-only storage. | It is not presented as the retail slider’s documented maximum. |
| Persistent Local Storage | Title-specific storage sized according to what the title requests. | It is distinct from Game Saves and does not define the retail allocation slider. |
When an app reports LocalState or LocalCache is full
One recent community report says increasing the development-files allocation did not increase that user’s app LocalState or LocalCache capacity. Treat this only as a troubleshooting clue, not a universal rule: the report does not establish behavior for every app, console, or OS version. See the individual report.

Note the exact app, path, or volume named in the error. If it names app-specific writable data rather than development files, changing the development allocation may not solve the problem. The sources do not document a universal fix for that case.
When the issue concerns game saves
Microsoft’s Game Saves documentation gives a maximum of 256 MB per title for the documented user save systems (documentation last updated July 7, 2026). That is a save quota, not the retail Dev Mode development-files limit. Microsoft separately distinguishes Game Saves from console Persistent Local Storage.

What to check before troubleshooting further
- Record the exact warning text and the named storage area, app, or path.
- Note the console model and system software version; the available sources do not establish model-by-model slider limits.
- Separate development-file allocation from app-specific writable data and Game Saves before changing settings.
- Do not assume an external drive changes the Dev Home allocation or fixes an app-specific limit; the sources do not establish either outcome.
