To enable Developer Mode on a retail Xbox, install the Dev Mode Activation app, enter its activation code in Microsoft’s activation flow, then select Switch and restart in the app. To return to normal game use, open Dev Home, choose Leave developer mode, and let the console restart.
What changes between Developer Mode and Retail Mode?
| Mode | What you see | Use it for | How to switch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Developer Mode | Dev Home opens when you press the Xbox button. | Development and testing activities described in Microsoft’s Xbox documentation. | In Dev Home, choose Leave developer mode. |
| Retail Mode | The ordinary Xbox Home experience opens. | Playing retail games and using the console normally. | Use the Dev Mode Activation app and choose Switch and restart to enter Developer Mode. |
Microsoft’s FAQ says switching to Retail Mode lets you play your games. Changing modes on a retail console is distinct from configuring a managed development kit or changing an Xbox Live sandbox; Microsoft’s GDK documentation on development kits and retail consoles describes a separate development-kit context, with some guidance restricted to Xbox developer-program members.
How to enable Developer Mode
- Install the activation app. On the retail Xbox, search the Xbox Store for Dev Mode Activation and install it.
- Get the code. Open the app and note the activation code displayed on the console.
- Complete Microsoft’s activation flow. Sign in with the developer account and enter the code. The documented sequence then asks you to accept and activate; wait for the console’s activation process to finish.
- Restart into Developer Mode. Reopen Dev Mode Activation and select Switch and restart. The console restarts into Developer Mode.
This app-and-code sequence is the one documented in Microsoft’s Xbox activation instructions. The available documentation does not establish that every console model, region, dashboard version, or account state will show identical labels or screens. If the app or activation page differs, follow Microsoft’s current activation flow rather than guessing at a menu path.
How to switch back to Retail Mode
- While in Developer Mode, open Dev Home.
- Choose Leave developer mode.
- Allow the console to restart. It returns to Retail Mode.

How to check which mode the Xbox is in
Press the Xbox button on the controller. If it opens Dev Home, the console is in Developer Mode; if it opens the regular Home experience, it is in Retail Mode. Microsoft also lists loss of access to Store or Live services and games not working as possible signs of Developer Mode, but the Home-screen check is the direct way to identify the mode.
What happens to games, apps, and saves?
Microsoft says installed games and apps are not lost when leaving the Developer Program. For saves made while online, Microsoft describes recovery through cloud saves; that qualification matters, so do not assume an offline save has the same recovery path.

Limits and dated program terms
Microsoft’s Xbox One Developer Mode Activation Program agreement, last updated December 23, 2021, says an individual or company may activate up to three Xbox One consoles at a time. The same dated agreement warns that Devkit updates may not be available to non-Devkit consoles and could temporarily diminish or remove console functionality. These are cautions in that 2021 agreement, not a claim about a newly announced 2026 policy. See the Xbox One Developer Mode Activation Program agreement.
Microsoft also states in its FAQ that Xbox no longer supports x86 app development or x86 app submissions to the Store. This is a specific development limitation, not a complete summary of all current Xbox development policies.
