A computer lab is the better fit when the priority is dependable access to computers and software for digital work. If the curriculum includes both physical making and screen-based design, plan for a flexible or combined space rather than treating the choice as “hands-on versus computers.”
What separates a STEAM lab from a computer lab?
A STEAM lab is organized around learning activities: students investigate questions, create or modify things, and use tools and technology to test ideas. The U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Career, Technical, and Adult Education describes a makerspace as an environment where students “conceive, create, and collaborate through making.” It describes making as a hands-on process of imagining, creating, tinkering, manufacturing, testing, and demonstrating ideas. That definition supports the makerspace side of this comparison, but it is not a universal definition of every STEAM lab. U.S. Department of Education: CTE Makeover Challenge
A computer lab is best understood here by its primary function: providing students with access to computers and software for digital tasks. The sources cited below do not establish a universal definition of a computer lab, so schools should judge their actual setup by the devices, programs, access, and support it provides—not by the room name.
In practice, the distinction is about emphasis, not whether computers are present. STEAM activities may require computers for coding, research, or digital design; they may also require materials and work surfaces for physical prototyping.

Which setup fits the work students will do?
| Curriculum priority | Better starting point | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Physical prototyping, fabrication, and iterative testing | STEAM or makerspace capability | Age-appropriate equipment, trained supervision, safe layout, storage, consumables, and maintenance. |
| Reliable access to computers and software for digital tasks | Computer lab capability | Device specifications, software licenses and multi-user terms, accessibility, security, and technical support. |
| Projects that move between coding or design and physical making | Flexible or combined arrangement | Work zones, power and network access, storage, scheduling, supervision, and realistic equipment use. |
| A new or remodeled school facility | Adaptable space planned around the curriculum | Current local building and safety codes, district standards, facilities guidance, and long-term maintenance. |
For example, a project in which students program a device and then test it in a physical prototype needs both digital access and room for making. A lab with computers alone may support the coding but constrain the build-and-test work; a workshop without suitable computers may constrain the programming or design. Plan around the whole learning sequence.
What does hands-on learning require?
Hands-on learning does not require expensive or industrial equipment. Its defining feature is student activity: imagining, making, testing, and demonstrating ideas. Bank Street School for Children describes its STEAM lab as combining programming, fabrication, and technology in society through inquiry-based projects and targeted skills instruction. Its examples include coding, robotics, sensors, LEDs, 3D printers, laser cutters, and saws. Those are examples of one program, not a checklist every school must reproduce. Equipment should follow the projects and students’ ages. Depending on the curriculum, useful categories might include basic tools, sensors, LEDs, project materials, classroom 3D printers, or educational robotics kits. No particular model or vendor is endorsed by the cited sources. Before buying, check curriculum fit, age suitability, staff training, replacement parts, safety requirements, IT policy, and budget. Laser cutters, CNC equipment, and power tools are not prerequisites for hands-on learning; suitability and supervision depend on age and local policy.
How should a school plan a flexible or hybrid space?
The Massachusetts School Building Authority’s facilities guidance recommends adaptable science and technology/engineering spaces that can support a range of curricula and hands-on experiential uses, including makerspaces, STEAM labs, and fabrication labs. Its review of best practices dates to 2018, so treat it as facilities guidance rather than a substitute for current local requirements. A flexible room can combine computer access with project and fabrication areas, but flexibility needs to be designed into everyday operations. Consider how students move between screens and work surfaces, where materials and works-in-progress are stored, and how staff supervise activities. Confirm power, network access, accessibility, scheduling, maintenance, and safety needs before finalizing the layout.
Plan the operating model alongside the equipment:
- Curriculum: Identify the projects and skills the space must support, then map those needs to equipment and software.
- Staffing and safety: Set supervision expectations, train educators, and confirm age-appropriate procedures for any tools or machinery.
- Access and inclusion: Check whether devices, software, tools, and work surfaces are usable by the students who will use them.
- IT and procurement: Verify device compatibility, software licensing, multi-user terms, security requirements, and district technology approval.
- Ongoing operations: Account for storage, consumables, repairs, replacement parts, and the staff time required to keep equipment usable.
The 2024 STEAM Toolkit and User Guide advises educators to check for discounts, multi-user licensing, device compatibility, and school or district technology and security requirements when purchasing digital tools. How can educators choose equipment without overbuying?
Start with the curriculum and confirm the requirements of the specific program being taught. Project Lead The Way maps equipment and supplies to its programs, while noting that its public page is not a complete course product list. Treat program and vendor lists as curriculum-specific guidance, not a universal starter package; coordinate purchases with district technology advice. Project Lead The Way: STEM Classroom Equipment and Supplies
Educator training is part of the setup, not an optional extra. MIT Edgerton Center offers K–12 project tutorials, maker and STEAM resources, and educator professional development. Its materials describe teachers facilitating meaningful projects and students working on persistence, problem-solving, and self-direction. These are program aims and descriptions, not a controlled comparison showing that one room type produces better outcomes. MIT Edgerton Center: K-12 Maker Lab

What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The cited sources support a practical, curriculum-based choice: STEAM or makerspace capability for projects centered on making and iteration, computer-lab capability for dependable digital access, and adaptable arrangements where projects need both. They do not provide a controlled head-to-head study of STEAM labs and computer labs, a universal equipment budget, or evidence that a room label alone improves learning. No directly relevant named statistic comparing the two setups is established by these sources.
For a school decision, compare curriculum fit, student access and participation, flexibility, equipment and software compatibility, educator training, safety, maintenance, and total cost of ownership. Then confirm current local building codes, district standards, accessibility requirements, procurement rules, technology policies, and product specifications.
