To brew most effect potions in Minecraft, put water bottles and Nether Wart in a brewing stand to make Awkward Potions, then add the ingredient for the effect you want. Weakness and corrupted potions are exceptions to that basic path; Gunpowder makes a potion splashable, and Dragon’s Breath turns a splash potion into a lingering potion. Recipes and availability can vary by edition and game build, so check your version before relying on a specific result.

How the brewing recipe chain works

Mojang’s overview describes brewing as combining ingredients with a water bottle in a brewing stand. In the conventional recipe path, Nether Wart turns a Water Bottle into an Awkward Potion, which is the base for many effect potions. Microsoft Learn documents one example for Bedrock: Awkward Potion plus Blaze Powder makes Strength.

  1. Fill Glass Bottles with water to make Water Bottles.
  2. Use Nether Wart with Water Bottles in a brewing stand to make Awkward Potions.
  3. Add the effect ingredient for the potion you want.
  4. Optionally modify or convert the result, if the recipe and your edition support it.

Weakness is commonly listed as a direct Water Bottle plus Fermented Spider Eye recipe. Fermented Spider Eye also corrupts certain existing potions, but confirm the path in your edition and build.

Effect potion recipes

This table is a practical recipe cross-check, not a claim that every row is verified for every edition or build. Most rows use an Awkward Potion as their base; follow the stated alternate path where noted. Confirm current availability before relying on newer or edition-specific recipes.

Base potions and common dead ends

Base potion Recipe Use
Water Bottle Fill a Glass Bottle with water Starting point for brewing.
Awkward Potion Water Bottle + Nether Wart Base for many effect recipes.
Mundane Potion Several ingredients can produce this; consult your edition’s recipe data No effect recipe is established here.
Thick Potion Water Bottle + Glowstone Dust No effect recipe is established here.

Do not assume that an unsuccessful or unfamiliar base potion can be turned into an effect potion. Follow a recipe for your edition and build instead of adding ingredients at random.

Modifiers and potion forms

Ingredient What it does Important caveat
Redstone Dust Extends duration where supported. Instant effects do not have a duration to extend. The cited secondary guide says Redstone and Glowstone cannot be combined.
Glowstone Dust Raises potency to level II where supported. Not every potion can be upgraded; check the recipe and build.
Fermented Spider Eye Corrupts certain effects, such as Swiftness to Slowness, Healing to Harming, or Night Vision to Invisibility, according to the secondary guide. Not every potion has a corrupted counterpart.
Gunpowder Converts a potion into a Splash Potion. Bedrock sample documentation demonstrates this container conversion.
Dragon’s Breath Converts a Splash Potion into a Lingering Potion. The cited secondary guide describes this conversion; verify availability in your build.

Edition and version notes

Some mechanics are edition-specific. Mojang’s overview states that in Bedrock, a potion can be used on a cauldron to fill it, and the cauldron holds up to three identical potions. Mojang’s Bedrock sample recipe documentation identifies its version as 1.21.90.3. Mojang’s Java 26.3 Snapshot 3 notes describe data-driven brewing recipes for that snapshot; do not assume snapshot behavior applies to every stable Java release.

The recipe rows above combine official examples with a secondary guide updated September 19, 2026. The detailed list is not a complete official recipe table captured for every edition and build. Treat newer potion availability, recipe paths, and modifier compatibility as version-sensitive.
