In WAVEN, hero choice and deck-building go together: a hero’s unique spells and passive shape a build, while shared spells and companions let you adapt it. Character unlock requirements and party-size rules are not established by the available current sources, so check the live game’s progression and team menus rather than relying on old guides. Any tier list is a dated opinion, not a universal verdict.
How character identity and builds work
Ankama’s August 5, 2025 redesign update described each hero as having four unique spells and a personal passive, alongside around 150 spells shared across heroes. It also described a 16-card deck made from spells and companions: spells use Action Points (AP), while companions use Command Points (CP). These are the developer’s announced redesign rules; because the update predates the current game version by more than a year, confirm exact live rules in game. Ankama’s Community Update #2
For a build, start with what the hero’s passive and unique spells reward, then choose shared cards and companions that support that plan. Check card costs and whether the resulting AP and CP demands fit together. A deck that looks strong on paper may not suit the mode or objective you are playing.
Compare heroes by playstyle, not class label alone
- Hero identity: What does the passive encourage, and how do the unique spells enable it?
- Shared cards: Which spells support the plan, and what are their AP costs?
- Companions: Which companions complement the hero, and can you afford their CP costs?
- Mode and goal: Is the build for a particular activity, progression, or preferred combat style?
WAVEN’s official factsheet describes it as a free-to-play tactical RPG with turn-based combat and deck-building, available on PC, Mac, smartphones, and tablets. That broad description does not establish current hero unlock routes or detailed class rules. Ankama’s game factsheet

How to unlock characters
Current character-by-character unlock requirements are not established by the available sources. Use the live game’s progression screens and character menus to see which heroes are available and what each locked entry requires. Do not assume an older community guide’s steps still apply after updates.

Which Waven character is strongest?
Pocket Gamer’s tier list, updated October 5, 2026 for version 0.23.7, places Flamboyant Kasai, Hioplite Paladir, Arcarius Paladir, Brutal Fairblade, and Varaclus Blade in SS tier. This is that outlet’s ranking for the stated version, not an official balance ruling or proof that those heroes are best in every mode. Pocket Gamer’s Waven tier list
The list’s explanation for Flamboyant Kasai gives a more useful clue than the tier label alone: applying an elemental state grants a Sword Aura of the same element, supporting a damage-focused playstyle. If that mechanic and approach suit your goals, the hero may be worth considering; a high placement by itself does not tell you whether its build or play pattern is right for you. Rankings can change with updates.

How to choose a team
There is no established current party-size limit or definitive best team in the available sources. Check the live team interface for the rules that apply to your mode, then choose heroes and builds around the activity and goal. Compare their passives, unique spells, shared-card plans, AP and CP costs, and companion interactions. A tier list can help you identify candidates, but it cannot establish an optimal composition without accounting for mode, roster access, and how you want to play.
