Steam Families shares eligible game libraries, not a separate subscription service. Choose the rules for your platform before changing accounts or consoles.
How game-subscription sharing differs by platform
“Family sharing” can mean a group of accounts receiving a membership, other accounts using benefits on one configured console, or access to eligible games in a shared library. Those arrangements are not interchangeable.

The limits and rules above are those described by the platforms’ support materials checked on October 7, 2026. Plan entitlements, catalogs, settings, and regional availability can change.
Share Nintendo Switch Online through a family group
Nintendo Switch Online Family and Switch Online + Expansion Pack Family memberships cover the people in the purchaser’s Nintendo Account family group—not everyone who happens to use the same Switch. Nintendo Support says a family membership can cover up to eight Nintendo Account users, and members can use different consoles. Accounts added to the group later are covered too.

- Create a Nintendo Account family group or join the group that will hold the membership.
- Confirm that each person who needs the service is a member of that group. The group administrator controls adding and removing members; the membership purchaser does not have to be the administrator.
- Buy or confirm the relevant Family membership. Check that the membership tier includes the features your household wants.
Nintendo says accounts with different country settings can belong to the same family group, but features may vary by country. If the purchaser leaves the group, other members lose the membership features until they are members again. Before joining someone else’s Family membership, check whether your own individual membership is set to renew: Nintendo says individual and family membership terms do not stack. If you mean sharing a digital Nintendo game
That is separate from sharing Nintendo Switch Online. Nintendo says digital games and downloadable content are tied to the Nintendo Account that bought them. Other users can play when the content is loaded as a virtual game card on the console, and virtual game cards can be lent to members of the family group. Share eligible Xbox benefits on a Home Xbox
Microsoft’s documented console-sharing model lets other accounts using the subscriber’s designated Home Xbox access the subscriber’s games, durable add-ons, and content enabled through a subscription such as Game Pass. The subscriber does not need to stay signed in for other accounts to use those Home Xbox entitlements. Consumable add-ons are excluded.
Sharing on another Xbox works differently. Microsoft’s product-sharing documentation describes roaming licenses: the subscriber must be signed in and online on that console. If the subscriber signs out, other accounts on that device can no longer use those roaming licenses. Do not assume that access on a second console works like access on the Home Xbox.

Check Xbox’s current consumer support instructions for the console setting and confirm what the exact Game Pass plan includes. Microsoft’s licensing documentation explains the sharing model, but the benefits available depend on the subscription entitlement.
Share selected PlayStation Plus benefits on configured consoles
Sony allows selected PlayStation Plus benefits to be shared with other accounts on one PS5 that has Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled, and on one PS4 activated as the subscriber’s primary PS4. The subscription remains tied to the subscriber’s account; sharing is not a way to grant another person general remote access from any console.

Benefits Sony says can be shared
- Online multiplayer.
- Downloaded Monthly Plus games.
- Downloaded games bought at a Plus discount.
- Catalog games, depending on the membership plan.
Benefits that remain personal to the subscriber
- Buying discounted products from the PlayStation Store on another account.
- Redeeming Plus games on another account.
- Online storage.
- Automatic patch downloads.
- Early access to limited-time trials.
Child accounts can access only age-appropriate Plus content under the parent’s settings. Sony’s “Share PlayStation Plus benefits on PlayStation consoles” and “PlayStation Plus support” pages explain the console-sharing and primary-PS4 requirements; check the current benefit details for your plan.

Steam Families is a way to share access to eligible games in members’ Steam libraries. Steam Support’s Families FAQ lists a six-member limit and notes that some games cannot be shared—for example, titles that require a separate third-party key, account, or subscription. Check the eligibility of a specific game in Steam before relying on family access.

Steam Families does not transfer or share an unrelated service subscription such as Game Pass, EA Play, or a publisher account. A game that requires one of those services may therefore remain unavailable through a shared Steam library, even if the game itself appears in a member’s library.
