Start at the emulator project’s official source
Find the project’s own website or official source repository, then follow its link to the release. Confirm that the release name and Windows build match what the project describes. Do not rely on a search ad or a prominent download button simply because it uses the emulator’s name. Microsoft recommends downloading software from trusted sources, including the official vendor website: Microsoft’s guidance on how malware can infect a PC.
A direct release that can be traced to the project is a better sign than an unexplained download, not a guarantee. A mirror may be legitimate, but its connection to the project must be clear; if you cannot verify that connection, choose the project’s own release instead.
Avoid portals, repacks, and bundled installers
Third-party download portals may offer an installer that differs from the project’s release, and a repack can add software or change the installation flow. Microsoft warns that unwanted software can arrive bundled with other programs and recommends reading installation choices carefully. Prefer the project’s direct release over a download manager or installer that adds unrelated offers.

Inspect the file and installer before proceeding
- Check that the file name and operating-system version match the project’s release information.
- Review any publisher information Windows displays. If the publisher is absent, unexpected, or inconsistent with the project, stop and verify the source rather than guessing.
- Read each installer screen. Decline unrelated offers, and do not continue if the installer hides what it will install, requests permissions unrelated to the emulator, or tells you to turn off security protection.

Understand Windows reputation warnings
An “unknown” reputation warning is not proof that a program is malicious, but it is not a clean bill of health either. Microsoft says its reputation system can warn about software it does not yet recognize; uncommon software is not necessarily malicious. Pause and re-check the source and publisher before deciding what to do. Do not disable antivirus or SmartScreen just to force the file to run.

Keep Windows and browser protections on
Install current Windows and browser updates, and keep real-time antivirus protection enabled. Microsoft recommends up-to-date antivirus protection and notes that Microsoft Defender is built into modern Windows versions. Its potentially unwanted app guidance recommends leaving protection on and enabling both app blocking and download blocking; download blocking works with Microsoft Edge.

If you already downloaded or installed it
- Do not run the file if you have not already done so and something about its source, publisher, or installer seems wrong.
- Open Windows Security and scan the file or your device. Microsoft describes full and offline scans as options when dealing with unwanted software.
- Remove software you do not want, and do not follow any instruction from the installer to disable protection.

What the Microsoft Store policy does—and does not—tell you
Microsoft Store Policies version 7.20 state: “Products that emulate a game system or game platform are not allowed on any device family.” That is a rule for products distributed through the Store. It is not a malware assessment of every emulator downloaded independently, and the presence of a Store listing does not establish that a particular file is safe. Read the Microsoft Store Policies in that limited context.
No checklist can certify a specific release
A project’s popularity, an open-source label, or the absence of an alert from one scanner does not by itself prove a downloaded build is safe. That judgment requires examining the exact file. If its origin is unclear, the publisher does not match expectations, or the installer asks you to bypass protections, do not run it.
