You cannot prove an unofficial PC game port is safe from a filename, a clean antivirus scan, or a download link that looks popular. Reduce the risk by verifying the creator and download source first, checking that the file matches the project’s release details, reviewing warnings and signatures, and keeping Windows protections enabled. If the source or installer behavior cannot be explained, do not run it.
1. Verify who made the port and where it is hosted
Start with the person or team responsible for the port. Find the project page or repository through a creator account or site you can independently verify, then follow the download link from that page. A search result, mirror, repost, shortened link, or unsolicited message does not establish that a file came from the creator. Microsoft recommends downloading software from trusted sources in its guidance on protecting your PC from unwanted software.
Check that the project identifies the port, its release or version, the game or platform it supports, and the files you should expect. If you cannot identify an accountable creator, the download instructions conflict, or a page keeps redirecting to unrelated offers, stop rather than guessing which download button is genuine.
This matters beyond game ports. In a report published September 1, 2026, Microsoft described a specific campaign involving counterfeit software-download sites impersonating trusted vendors. The report included same-named archives whose hashes changed; it is an example of a threat pattern, not a measure of how often unofficial ports are malicious. 2. Check the download before opening it
Match the file to the project’s instructions
Compare the downloaded filename, file type, and release version with what the project says to expect. An unexplained executable, a password-protected archive without a clear reason, or a mismatch between the project’s instructions and the downloaded file is a reason to stop and verify the source again. A familiar filename by itself is not proof of identity.
Review Windows and browser warnings
Do not reflexively dismiss a SmartScreen warning. Microsoft says SmartScreen reputation systems use signals such as download volume, URL reputation, file hashes, and digital signatures. A warning can appear because a file is new or uncommon; it is not, by itself, proof that the file is malicious. Microsoft’s SmartScreen FAQ states: “No – the App Reputation warning is not an indication that the download is malicious.” That does not make an unexplained warning safe to ignore: consider how you reached the file, whether its publisher is known, and whether the warning makes sense for the release.

Inspect the publisher signature, if there is one
On Windows, right-click the downloaded file, choose Properties, and look for the Digital Signatures tab. Check whether the signer’s identity matches the creator or distributor the project says to expect. Microsoft explains that Authenticode can help verify a file’s origin and whether it has been altered or corrupted in its Authenticode guidance for game developers.
A matching signature is useful evidence, not a guarantee that the software is harmless. An unsigned file is also not automatically malware, particularly in a community project, but an unexpected executable with no signature deserves extra caution. If the signer is mismatched or unexplained, do not proceed on the assumption that the name is close enough.

Scan with current protection
Keep Windows, browser protections, and Microsoft Defender Antivirus enabled and updated. Microsoft identifies Defender Antivirus as built into modern Windows versions and recommends updated antivirus protection. Scan the downloaded file before opening it; do not disable Defender or SmartScreen just to make an unexplained download run. A clean scan is one signal, not proof of safety for every version or for behavior that may occur after launch.
A warning can also identify potentially unwanted applications rather than malware. Microsoft’s PUA guidance includes unwanted advertising, unexpected bundled apps, and cryptomining behavior. That distinction does not make a PUA alert irrelevant: it can indicate software or behavior you did not intend to install. Compare a checksum only if the project publishes one
If the creator provides a checksum, compare it with the downloaded file using a local hashing tool. The expected value must come from a project source you have independently verified; a checksum posted beside a file on the same untrusted page does not independently establish its identity. A matching hash shows the file matches that published value, not that the file is benign.

- Source: The creator and project page are identifiable, and the download comes from a link on that verified page.
- File identity: The name, type, version, and, where available, signer or checksum match the project’s instructions.
- Warnings: Any SmartScreen, Defender, or browser alert has a plausible explanation; there is no unexplained detection.
- Installer behavior: The installation steps are documented and do not demand that you disable protections, grant unexplained privileges, or install unrelated software.
Do not run the file if it comes from an unverifiable mirror, has a mismatched publisher, triggers an unexplained detection, or asks you to turn off security controls. A forum comment calling a detection a false positive is not enough to establish that a file is safe. Microsoft’s warning guidance explains why alerts are not definitive proof either way, but it cannot certify an unnamed port or a particular download.
4. If you already ran the file
If the installer behaved suspiciously or you think it may have installed unwanted software, update Microsoft Defender security intelligence and run a full scan. If unwanted software persists, Microsoft recommends an offline scan and provides a way to submit suspicious files for analysis in its PC protection guidance. If the device may be compromised, avoid accessing sensitive accounts from it while you address the issue; persistent signs of compromise may require help from a qualified support professional. These steps reduce risk but do not guarantee remediation.
