What you need depends on the console generation and the game. Microsoft’s Xbox PC app offers a limited, region-dependent route for a small set of original Xbox games. For broader original Xbox emulation, xemu requires system files dumped from a physical console. Xenia runs Xbox 360 games, not original Xbox games, and does not require Xbox 360 system files.

Can I play original Xbox games on PC?
Yes, through Microsoft’s Xbox PC app for the titles in its published catalog, or through an original Xbox emulator such as xemu. These are different routes: Microsoft’s app has its own game availability and PC requirements, while xemu is an emulator that requires system files as well as a game.
Microsoft’s Xbox PC app
Microsoft announced the early release of Xbox Backward Compatibility on PC on July 22, 2026. It began with the four original Xbox games listed above and was available through the Xbox PC app in supported regions. The announcement said the games could be purchased on PC and were included with all Xbox Game Pass plans; existing digital console licenses for those games carried over. Availability may change after that dated launch announcement, so check the current app catalog for your region.

xemu for original Xbox games
xemu is a free, open-source original Xbox emulator for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its documented graphics requirement is an OpenGL 4.0-compatible GPU. Actual performance and compatibility depend on the computer and game; xemu’s compatibility reports reflect volunteer testing on particular versions and systems. In addition to xemu and a game, setup requires three system files:
- An MCPX Boot ROM image.
- A Flash ROM (BIOS) image.
- A hard-disk image.
xemu says the required copyrighted files should be dumped from your own physical Xbox; do not assume that downloading firmware from a third party is authorized. There is also an important BIOS limitation: an unmodified retail BIOS cannot currently boot games because key DRM functions are unimplemented. A debug BIOS or a modified retail BIOS that boots unsigned software is required. xemu offers a prebuilt 8 GB hard-disk image with an unsigned basic dashboard as one setup option. Can Xenia run original Xbox games?
No. Xenia is an Xbox 360 emulator and explicitly does not support original Xbox games. For original Xbox software, use the Xbox PC app where the game is available or consider an original Xbox emulator such as xemu.

Xenia’s Quickstart says the emulator does not require Xbox 360 system files. It checks for minimum supported CPU and GPU capabilities when it launches, and recommends installing current graphics drivers. OpenGL and Direct3D 11 or older are unsupported, so a compatible graphics setup is essential. Follow the Xenia Quickstart for current setup guidance.

Game compatibility is title-specific: check the project’s FAQ and compatibility guidance before assuming a game will run or be playable. The Quickstart describes transferring content from an Xbox 360 using USB storage and Velocity, and disc ripping with an Xbox 360 that can read discs. Keep game transfers to copies you are entitled to use; do not rely on downloads of commercial game files. It also notes that digital Xbox Live Arcade games can start in demo or trial mode by default.
Controller: optional, not a requirement
A controller is not mandatory, but it can be more comfortable than keyboard input for many games. Xenia supports XInput controllers by default, including Xbox 360 and Xbox One controllers, according to its FAQ.
