To recruit an existing character in Baldur’s Gate 3, the closest match is Zolla’s Recruit any NPC mod: its listing describes a spell that recruits or dismisses a character. “Any” is the mod’s stated aim, not a guarantee that every NPC works reliably. The listing is marked Patch 8 Compatible, requires Norbyte’s Script Extender, and describes the restored features as partial.
Option 1: Recruit an existing NPC directly
Zolla’s Recruit any NPC is intended for adding an existing character to your party rather than making a copy. The mod author says its current behavior is to recruit or dismiss a character by casting a spell on them.
The Nexus listing reports version 0.1.0, a last-updated date of September 17, 2025, and Patch 8 compatibility. The author describes the release as a partial restoration; several features intended in the original mod remain non-functional. The listing does not establish support for game builds newer than Patch 8 or reliable compatibility with every NPC.
Before installing
- Check the live mod page against your installed game version before downloading. Its stated compatibility is Patch 8, and a later build is not confirmed by that listing.
- Install Norbyte’s Script Extender, which the mod lists as required, and use BG3 Mod Manager, which the author recommends. Follow the current instructions on the mod listing and Script Extender releases.
- Expect partial functionality rather than a universal solution: the mod page does not promise that every character or feature works.
Script Extender and game updates
Norbyte’s release FAQ says Script Extender supports Patch 8, updates automatically through the game launcher, and that new versions target the latest game version. Since compatibility is version-sensitive, check the maintainer’s release information if the game updates or the mod stops working.

Option 2: Add a duplicate instead
Full Custom Companions (Hirelings) takes a different approach: it can duplicate NPCs and add the copies to your party. It is an alternative when you want an NPC-like party member, not a way to recruit the original character.

The two mods therefore solve different problems. Choose direct recruitment if you want to bring the original character along; choose the duplicate-based approach if a copy is acceptable and its story and voice limitations fit your playthrough. Using mods in multiplayer
Larian’s Official Mod Support FAQ says everyone in a modded multiplayer party needs the exact same mods installed at the same versions. Coordinate the mod list and versions before joining a campaign.

Larian’s official Toolkit documentation covers project setup, scripting, resource editing, and publishing. It is a path for learning general mod creation, not a one-click way to make every NPC recruitable. The Toolkit is PC-only and requires 160 GB of available disk space, according to Larian’s FAQ.

There is also a specific Patch 8 limitation: Larian’s guide to importing a mod says importing packed .pak files is limited and excludes some file types, including stats and UUID files. The official material does not provide a universal recipe for making every NPC recruitable.
