To roll back SteamOS on Steam Frame, power the headset off, start it while holding AUX, then choose Previous B in the SteamOS menu. Valve describes this option as returning to the previous known-good OS version while retaining user data, including installed games and saves.
Roll back SteamOS on Steam Frame
- Power the headset off: Hold the power button for 10 seconds. Valve recommends keeping Steam Frame plugged into power during this process.
- Open the recovery menu: Hold the AUX button, then press the power button to turn the headset on.
- Wait for the menu: Continue holding AUX until the menu labeled “SteamOS” appears.
- Select the rollback option: Choose Previous B, the second option from the top.
These are Steam Frame-specific instructions. Do not substitute the button sequence for another SteamOS device. Valve’s SteamOS Recovery and Troubleshooting article describes the Frame sequence and the purpose of “Previous B.”
What “Previous B” does—and what it does not specify
Valve says the recovery option returns the device to the previous known-good OS version while retaining user data such as installed games and saves. This is the documented intent, not a guarantee for every recovery attempt or failure scenario.
The instructions do not name the exact build that will be restored or specify how the option behaves across particular beta channels or builds. Treat it as a rollback to the previous known-good version, not as a confirmed return to a named beta or stable release.

Choose the recovery action that matches your goal

If the SteamOS menu does not appear
The documented Previous B rollback uses Steam Frame’s built-in recovery menu; it does not call for a USB drive or cable. If the headset cannot boot to that menu, Valve documents separate recovery alternatives, including booting from a prepared USB recovery drive and, for Steam Frame, QDL flashing over USB-C. Those are distinct procedures, not steps in the ordinary beta rollback.

Use Valve’s installation and repair guidance to assess those alternatives. In particular, do not choose Re-image Device as if it were a routine rollback: Valve says re-imaging wipes user information and installed content. Repair SteamOS is the option Valve describes as attempting to preserve games and personal content.
