World of Warcraft Race Restrictions: Classes, Factions, and Customization

Race affects class eligibility, faction choices, Allied Race unlocks, and appearance options in retail World of Warcraft. Here’s how to check the rules without relying on a stale class chart.

In retail World of Warcraft, race can limit which classes you may choose, determine your faction options, and affect which appearance choices are available. Mage, Priest, and Rogue are open to every playable race, but other race/class combinations remain restricted and can change with updates. For a specific character, check the current in-game character-creation screen rather than relying on an older class chart.

Which WoW races can be which classes?

Race and class eligibility are separate from appearance customization: changing a character’s look does not make an otherwise unavailable class combination available. Blizzard’s October 2022 announcement opened Mage, Priest, and Rogue to all playable races, saying that “all playable races will be able to join the fray” as those classes. The announcement also published a race/class matrix, but it is a dated reference, not a complete current roster: later updates have added combinations.

For example, Blizzard’s January 2026 Midnight pre-expansion update added Void Elf Demon Hunters. This illustrates why an older matrix may not reflect current eligibility. To confirm a particular combination in the current retail version, use the in-game character-creation screen. Blizzard’s current playable-races page is useful for identifying available races and their faction grouping, but does not provide a consolidated current class matrix.

For the history and original matrix, see Blizzard’s October 2022 announcement. Its Mage, Priest, and Rogue rule is clear; do not treat its other entries as a definitive list of today’s combinations.

Can any race join either faction?

No. Blizzard lists most standard races under either the Alliance or the Horde. Pandaren and Dracthyr appear under both factions, while Allied Races are listed separately and must be recruited in-game. The faction groupings are shown on Blizzard’s race guide.

Dracthyr’s faction is selected during character creation, according to Blizzard’s Dracthyr Evoker guide. Earthen can choose either the Alliance or the Horde once unlocked; their requirements and class options are described in Blizzard’s Earthen guide.

How do I unlock Allied Races?

Allied Races are not simply selected from the standard race list: they must be recruited in-game. Blizzard’s 2023 update removed most Allied Race unlock restrictions, retaining a level requirement. It says an account can unlock all Allied Races once it has a character at level 40. See the Fractures in Time update notes for that change, then follow the in-game unlock guidance for the race you want; individual races can still have specific quest or campaign steps.

Earthen as an example

Earthen can join either faction, but becoming playable requires completing the campaign and quest sequence Blizzard lists in its Earthen guide. The guide also gives the race’s class combinations and highlights appearance options including gem encrustations, beards, and skin colors. Check that guide and the character-creation screen for the combination you plan to play.

What does race change about customization?

Race determines which race-specific appearance options are available; it does not remove the class restrictions described above. Blizzard’s Earthen guide, for instance, calls out gem encrustations, beards, and skin colors. Dracthyr have two forms, and Blizzard’s Dracthyr guide says both can be customized and their appearance can be changed at a Barber Shop. That article dates to 2022, so its then-current character-creation limits per realm should not be assumed to apply now.

Can I change my race or faction later?

Blizzard offers optional paid race-change and faction-change services. Its service announcement says a faction change includes a race change for the character’s class. Review the current character-services terms for availability, requirements, and price before buying; the announcement notes that relevant services require a subscription or game time. A service is a separate decision from checking whether your intended combination is eligible in the current game.

How to choose a race and class

  1. Confirm class eligibility. Select the race and class in the current retail character-creation screen; do not rely on a 2022 matrix for the full live list.
  2. Check faction options. Confirm whether the race belongs to one faction or lets you choose, and account for the fact that Allied Races must be recruited in-game.
  3. Check unlock steps. If you want an Allied Race, review its current in-game guidance; the account-level threshold does not replace any race-specific quest sequence.
  4. Compare appearance choices. Look at the race-specific options and identify which looks can be adjusted later, such as Dracthyr appearance at a Barber Shop.
  5. Consider a service only after creation. If you later want a different race or faction, check Blizzard’s current service terms rather than assuming a change is free or that every combination is permitted.
