If you’re looking for a 4X game with the city-building and exploration of Civilization and the family politics of Crusader Kings, start with Old World. Developed by Mohawk Games and published by Hooded Horse, it follows a ruling dynasty through generations in antiquity. Its biggest adjustment for a conventional 4X player is that actions draw on a limited pool of orders: you must choose what matters most each turn, rather than assume every unit can act freely.
What is Old World?
Old World is a historical 4X strategy game released on Steam on May 18, 2022. Its setting stays in antiquity, and its turns advance year by year, rather than taking your civilization through a succession of historical eras. You still explore, establish and develop cities, research technologies, gather resources, and deal with rival powers through armies and diplomacy. The difference is that your ruler, family, and court are active parts of that strategy, not just names attached to an abstract civilization. Steam’s listing confirms the game’s release and multi-generation dynasty premise; the mechanical details here are described in a 2020 early-build preview and a 2021 review.

What should a Civilization player adjust to first?
Orders are a shared action budget
Many actions use orders from a common pool. Spending orders on one unit or activity means having fewer available for others, though a unit can receive multiple actions when you commit more orders to it. The practical shift is from asking “What can I move?” to “Which action is worth an order now?” In his April 15, 2020 preview, Kotaku writer Luke Plunkett summed up the design: “It’s no longer an expectation, but a resource.” That preview covered an early build, so treat the quotation as a description of the central idea, not a guarantee of current balance details. Read Plunkett’s preview at Kotaku.
Found cities at marked sites
You cannot place a new city just anywhere a settler can reach. Cities are founded at designated locations, so exploration helps you identify useful sites before you commit to expansion. Make scouting part of your plan: a nearby marked site can matter more than an attractive patch of land where a city cannot be founded. PC Gamer’s review describes the city-site constraint and the game’s annual turns.

Think in years, not sweeping eras
Old World concentrates on antiquity. Each turn represents a year, according to the cited review, so the pace of the calendar and the scale of the setting differ from a Civilization-style game that advances across many historical periods. This focus also makes the fate of a particular ruler and their successors part of the campaign’s arc.
How do the dynasty and court fit into the strategy?
Your ruler ages and eventually dies; family members and courtiers can shape succession, relationships, city governance, and military command. Events can affect both the dynasty and the wider kingdom. In other words, a strong kingdom is not the only thing to manage: who is positioned to lead it next, and who has influence now, can also matter. A decision that looks personal or courtly may carry consequences for the state.

- Define Your Star Wars Saga - Choose from one of eight iconic roles
- Choose the Light or Dark Side - Meaningful choices throughout your journey will determine the light or dark side
- Adventure with Companions - Build or break meaningful relationships with your companions
- Engage in Heroic Star Wars Combat - Fight against reactive enemies battles
- Pilot Your Personal Starship - Earn your own ship which is your base of operations
When considering a character or event, look beyond its immediate effect. Ask whether it changes who can govern or command, affects relationships within the dynasty or court, or creates a succession concern. The available sources establish these systems, but do not identify a universally best character choice or opening plan.
What should you do in your first session?
Use this as a flexible loop, not a prescribed optimal build. The sources do not establish a tested best opening, difficulty, or civilization choice.

- Protect your position. Use armies and diplomacy to respond to rivals and safeguard the kingdom as it expands.
- Consider the next ruler. Pay attention to succession, court relationships, and the roles family members or courtiers may fill as the campaign continues.
Where can you check an unclear mechanic?
A 2021 review reports that the game included nested tooltips, help, and a Civilopedia, while also noting that some mechanics and character effects could be opaque. If a stat, event, or action is unclear, inspect its tooltip and consult the in-game reference rather than guessing at what it does. Those interface observations are from review-era coverage, not a confirmation of the current interface in every version. PC Gamer’s review discusses the help tools and areas of opacity.

| System | Old World | Conventional Civilization-style expectation |
|---|---|---|
| Actions | Many actions draw from a shared, limited orders pool; spending more orders can give a unit multiple actions. | Players may expect to issue actions broadly on a unit-by-unit basis without the same shared orders budget. |
| City placement | Found cities at designated sites. | Players may expect more freedom to choose where to settle. |
| Historical scope | Antiquity, with turns described as one year each. | Players may expect a campaign spanning multiple historical eras. |
| Leadership | A mortal ruler, dynasty, and court shape succession and kingdom affairs. | Leadership is often framed more abstractly around the civilization. |
These are useful contrasts, not a complete definition of either game. Old World retains core 4X activities such as exploration, city development, research, resource gathering, military action, and diplomacy; the orders budget and dynasty layer change how you weigh them.
