Best Buy Gaming PC Deals vs. Building a PC: Which Is Cheaper?

A prebuilt gaming PC is not always cheaper—or more expensive—than building. Compare exact specs and complete same-day costs before deciding.

Neither option is reliably cheaper in every case. Best Buy’s US listings cover many different configurations, and a 2026 Tom’s Guide comparison found its selected prebuilt PCs slightly cheaper than comparable DIY builds when it checked. That result is a snapshot, not a rule for every budget or deal. To find the cheaper option for your needs, compare a specific desktop with a complete parts list that matches it as closely as possible.

What current examples show—and what they don’t

Best Buy’s US desktop listings, accessed in 2026, displayed systems at different prices and specifications. The following are observed listing prices, not guaranteed current offers; inventory, sellers, configurations and discounts can change.

Best Buy listing example Listed configuration Observed price
CyberPowerPC desktop Ryzen 7 8700F, RTX 5060 8GB, 16GB DDR5, 1TB SSD $1,424.99
iBUYPOWER Slate Intel Core Ultra 5 225F, Intel Arc B570, 16GB DDR5, 1TB NVMe SSD $1,199.99
CyberPowerPC desktop Ryzen 7 9800X3D, RTX 5070, 32GB DDR5, 2TB SSD $2,299.99

These examples cannot establish whether buying or building is cheaper: each has different parts, and a fair DIY comparison would need a complete, closely matched bill of materials priced on the same day. Best Buy’s listings also include a broad assortment of models, so a conclusion about one configuration should not be applied to another. See Best Buy’s gaming desktop listings.

Tom’s Guide reported in its 2026 gaming PC comparison that the prebuilts it selected were slightly cheaper than comparable PCPartPicker builds at the time it checked. The publication attributed the direction in part to then-high RAM, SSD and GPU prices. That is a conclusion about its selected examples, not a market-wide statistic or a promise that a particular Best Buy deal beats DIY. Read Tom’s Guide’s gaming PC guide.

How to compare a Best Buy deal with a DIY build

  1. Record the exact prebuilt configuration. Note the graphics card, processor, RAM capacity and type, and SSD capacity. Check the product details for the power supply, cooling, motherboard and case where those are disclosed.
  2. Make a complete DIY parts list. Match the core specifications as closely as practical, then include the motherboard, case, power supply, cooling and any operating-system license you need. Add peripherals only if they are needed to make both options usable on the same basis; do not compare a complete desktop with an incomplete parts list.
  3. Price both options on the same day. Include delivery and tax consistently, and confirm the specific listing, seller and configuration. Retail prices and availability can change.
  4. Decide what your cash comparison counts. State whether assembly time and troubleshooting effort are excluded. If you value your time or would need paid help, account for that separately rather than treating the parts total as the whole cost.
  5. Compare what the price buys. Consider your resolution and frame-rate target, component quality, warranty and support terms, included software, upgrade options, and how comfortable you are assembling and troubleshooting a PC.

What the price tag leaves out

Performance and parts

A graphics card with the same name is a useful starting point, but the full configuration still matters. Match the CPU, memory and storage as well, and check the other components when the seller discloses them. For gaming, decide on a resolution and frame-rate target before comparing prices; a cheaper configuration is not a better deal if it misses the performance you want.

Upgrade flexibility

Building gives you control over part selection and can make later component changes easier. Best Buy Canada’s 2024 PC Components Buying Guide puts the general tradeoff this way: “A pre-built PC often limits your ability to upgrade, but a custom-built system ensures flexibility.” Treat that as general guidance, not a verdict on every desktop. Inspect the exact model’s upgrade access, warranty terms and whether its parts are standard or proprietary. The guide is Canadian and is not evidence about US prices. Convenience and support

A prebuilt arrives assembled, while a DIY build requires parts selection, assembly and setup. The value of the prebuilt’s convenience depends on how much you want to handle those tasks and on the specific system’s warranty and support terms. Best Buy describes an instructional build experience in which a tech covers components, demonstrates a build and shares assembly tips; the cited page does not establish local availability or terms. Which option should you choose?

  • Choose a prebuilt when a specific system meets your performance needs and its same-day price compares favorably with a complete, matched DIY basket—or when you prefer an assembled PC and the model’s support and warranty terms suit you.
  • Choose DIY when you want control over the parts, value the flexibility to select components, and are comfortable with the time and work involved. Price the whole build before assuming it will cost less.
  • Keep comparing when the prebuilt does not disclose enough component detail, the parts lists are not closely matched, or prices were checked on different days.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
