A Play Booster is built for both opening and drafting; a Collector Booster is aimed at collectors seeking premium treatments. For exact contents and odds, check Wizards of the Coast’s collecting article for the specific set.
Why Magic booster packs have different contents
There is no single pack recipe that applies to every Magic booster. The product type determines the broad experience, while the set determines details such as which cards can appear in particular slots and the probabilities attached to them.
Play Boosters brought together goals previously divided between Set Boosters and Draft Boosters. Set Boosters emphasized a varied opening experience, including opportunities for multiple rares, foils, art cards, and cards from The List. Draft Boosters used a more predictable rarity structure designed to support Limited play. Play Boosters aim to do both: provide packs for drafting while retaining some of the variation that makes opening packs exciting. Wizards explains the design trade-offs in its Play Booster overview, design discussion, and historical Set Booster explanation.
Those product goals also affect set design. A pack intended for Limited needs a playable spread of cards, while variable slots can create chances at additional rares or special cards. Wizards describes the design logic, but that logic does not guarantee identical slots or odds in every release.

What is generally in a Play Booster?
Wizards’ overview describes a general Play Booster pattern with common cards, dedicated uncommon slots, a rare or mythic rare slot, a land, non-foil and traditional-foil wildcard opportunities, and a final slot that may hold a non-playable insert. The exact arrangement and probabilities depend on the set. For example, the first Play Booster implementation, for Murders at Karlov Manor, included a guaranteed main-set rare or mythic rare slot, as well as wildcard opportunities. Its final slot could be a token, play aid, ad card, or art card.
The figures below are for that Murders at Karlov Manor example only, as described by Wizards in 2024. They are not universal Play Booster odds.

Play Booster or Collector Booster?
Choose by intended use rather than assuming every pack of the same set has the same contents. Wizards’ product guide positions Play Boosters for opening for fun and drafting, and Collector Boosters as the premium collector-focused option. The exact card counts, rarity ranges, foils, treatments, and extras should be checked against the named set’s own product details.

How to find the exact contents for a set
- Identify the set and the booster type you mean. A Play Booster and Collector Booster for the same release are different products.
- Open Wizards’ MTG Set Archive and select the release.
- Read that set’s collecting article and use the section for the relevant booster. For examples, Wizards’ pages for Foundations and Modern Horizons 3 publish release-specific details.
- Keep the product and set attached to any odds you find. A percentage published for one release is not a reliable estimate for another unless its own article says so.
For instance, Wizards’ 2024 Foundations collecting article lists 14 Magic cards in a Foundations Play Booster. That figure is specific to Foundations; it is not a universal card count for Play Boosters.

On October 5, 2026, Wizards announced that changes to Play and Collector Boosters will begin with Nauctis: The Sunken Realm, the first Magic set of 2027. The announcement gives examples including increased rare opportunities and the removal of foil common and uncommon cards. These are planned changes, not a description of every booster currently on sale. Consult the relevant set’s collecting article as release details are published. Wizards’ announcement has the stated timing and examples.
