What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Xbox Cloud Gaming runs a game on Microsoft’s remote servers and streams it to your device; console gaming runs the game on Xbox hardware in your home. Cloud play can spare you a local install and let you use supported devices you already own, but it relies on a suitable connection, an eligible game and the right access. Local console play requires an Xbox console and access to the game, but the game itself does not depend on a continuous cloud stream. Xbox Remote Play is a separate option: it streams a game running on your own home console.
What actually runs the game?
| Play method | Where the game runs | What you use to play |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Cloud Gaming | Microsoft’s Xbox server infrastructure | A supported device receives a stream; a compatible controller is generally required, though select games offer touch controls. |
| Local Xbox console gaming | Your Xbox console | You play on the console, typically on a connected display with a compatible controller. |
| Xbox Remote Play | Your own Xbox console at home | The console streams its running game to another device. |
The distinction is about where the game is executing, not simply which screen you use. An Xbox console can itself be a client for Cloud Gaming, so cloud and console are not always mutually exclusive device choices. Microsoft’s game-streaming overview distinguishes server-side streaming from Remote Play.
What you need for Xbox Cloud Gaming
A supported game, account and region
Xbox says supported free-to-play games such as Fortnite can be played with a free Microsoft account in supported regions. For most other cloud-playable games, Xbox lists Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate, plus a supported game and region. Cloud availability is not the same as the full locally playable Xbox library: eligibility can vary by title, region, plan, platform and time. Check the current Xbox Cloud Gaming page for the title and access terms that apply to you.
A supported device and controls
Xbox lists Windows PCs, Apple and Android phones and tablets, Xbox consoles, select LG, Samsung and VIDAA OS smart TVs, Amazon Fire TV, and select Meta Quest headsets. Availability varies by region and platform. Xbox says a compatible controller is needed for cloud gaming, although select games support Xbox touch controls. Check compatibility for both the specific game and device before relying on touch input or another control setup.

A suitable internet connection
Xbox gives 10 Mbps as the minimum download speed. Its guidance says best performance is achieved at 10 Mbps on mobile devices and 20 Mbps on consoles, PCs and tablets, and recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi or mobile data. These figures are recommendations, not guarantees of smooth play. Xbox says results also depend on connection quality, user location, device and other factors.
How the experience differs in practice
Network dependence and consistency
Cloud Gaming sends video to you while your inputs travel back to the service, so the experience depends on the connection throughout play. Congestion, wireless conditions, distance and device factors can affect responsiveness or streaming quality. Local console gaming avoids dependence on a continuous cloud-game stream once the game is available on the console, though online features may still require internet access.

There is no basis here for saying cloud play is always slower, blurrier or less reliable: actual results vary, and a weak home network can also affect online console play. Likewise, neither method is universally sharper or faster across every game and setup.
Installation and storage
Cloud play lets you start an eligible game without installing that cloud-playable game locally. A console requires local game access and may require installation or updates, using console storage. Cloud play does not eliminate every download or setup need on the device; it changes where the game itself runs.

Where you can play
Cloud Gaming can make supported games available on a compatible phone, computer, television or other listed device, including when you do not have a console in front of you. This flexibility is conditional: the device, game, region and account access must all qualify, and you need a workable connection. A console gives you a dedicated local gaming device but is less portable as a complete setup.
Game choice and access cost
Compare the particular games you want, not just the phrase “Xbox games.” A title being playable on Xbox locally does not automatically mean it is cloud-playable, and availability can change. Cloud access for most catalog games is tied to eligible Game Pass tiers, while local play requires an Xbox console and local access to the game. Which option costs less depends on hardware you already own, the game, subscription terms and how long you play; no universal cost comparison follows from the service alone.

Cloud Gaming hours and announced changes
Xbox’s Cloud Gaming page, accessed October 7, 2026, displays monthly allowances of 5 hours for Essential, 10 hours for Premium and 15 hours for Ultimate. Xbox says hours do not stack across multiple eligible Game Pass subscriptions; PC Game Pass does not include the listed cloud gaming benefit. Check the live plan terms before subscribing, since allowances and service terms can change.
Separately, Team Xbox announced on September 3, 2026 that these monthly limits would begin in November 2026: 5 hours for Essential, 10 for Premium and 15 for Ultimate. The announcement said users could buy extra hours through the Xbox Store after using their included amount, but did not yet state the price. It also announced a planned option, beginning in November, to buy cloud playtime and stream eligible games the player owns without a Game Pass subscription; the announcement did not specify its price, game list or full market availability. See Team Xbox’s announcement for any subsequent details. Team Xbox estimated the limits would affect 4% of Game Pass subscribers; that is Microsoft’s estimate, not an independently measured figure.
Best Value
Which option makes sense for you?
- Consider Cloud Gaming if you already have a supported device, want to avoid installing an eligible game locally, or value playing away from your console—and your region, game, access plan and connection support it.
- Consider local console play if you want the game to run on your own Xbox hardware and prefer not to depend on an uninterrupted cloud stream. You will need the console, local game access and sufficient storage for installations or updates.
- Consider Remote Play if you want to use another screen while the game runs on your own home console. It is not the same as using Microsoft’s cloud servers to run the game.
Before choosing, check the exact games you intend to play, your current hardware and connection, the applicable plan and monthly hours, supported controls, and whether portability matters more to you than running the game locally.
