There is no single best materia setup for every fight in Final Fantasy VII Remake. Use Cloud for close-range offense, Tifa for fast physical pressure, Barret for ranged damage or support, and Aerith for magic and healing. Then adjust for enemy weaknesses, your available linked materia slots, and the demands of the encounter.

How to build a materia setup that works

Materia equipped in weapons and armor grants magic, abilities, and summons. Some effects depend on linking materia in a connected pair of slots. For example, linking Elemental with an elemental spell applies that element to a weapon or provides resistance when equipped in armor. The available sockets on your chosen equipment determine whether a setup is possible.

Use Assess to reveal an enemy’s characteristics, weaknesses, and resistances before committing to an elemental weapon setup. A useful elemental match can become a liability against an enemy with the same affinity, so change the linked spell or move Elemental to another character when needed. Square Enix explains these systems on its official battle-system page.

Best starting materia setup for each party member

These are role-based starting points, not a tested ranking or a mandatory build. Equip what your weapons and armor can support, and share or move materia to fit the fight.

  • ICONIC CHARACTERS, UNFORGETTABLE STORY - Follow Cloud Strife, an ex-SOLDIER turned mercenary, as he joins Avalanche to take on the Shinra Electric Power Company. Cloud and his allies Barret, Tifa, and Aerith are pulled into a battle that will decide the fate of the planet.
  • EXPANDED CONTENT - FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE offers quests, mini-games, and missions set in expanded areas of Midgar. Encounter new characters and experience exciting content that adds even more depth to the story.

Cloud: close-range offense and flexible utility

Cloud’s sword makes him a natural close-range attacker. Deadly Dodge gives him an area physical attack after a dodge, making it a useful fit for an aggressive setup. When you have a linked slot available, consider pairing Elemental with the spell that matches the encounter on his weapon. If an enemy resists or shares that element, switch the pairing or use Barret as the Elemental carrier instead. GameSpot describes these options in its party-member loadout guide.

Tifa: physical pressure and stagger support

Build Tifa around frequent physical attacks and pressure. Her role is to keep enemies under pressure and help the party build toward a stagger rather than to carry a fixed collection of support materia in every battle.

For one specific Leviathan challenge, a GameFAQs endgame guide assigns Tifa First Strike, ATB Assist, and Lightning. That is an encounter-specific arrangement, not a general prescription for the story or every boss.

Barret: ranged damage or party support

Barret’s long-range attacks let the party pressure enemies while staying farther from danger. Use him as a damage dealer when range is useful, or move support materia to him if another character needs their usual slots.

In the same Leviathan challenge, the GameFAQs guide puts Magnify linked with Time on Barret so he can cast Haste across the party. Treat this as one strategy for that fight; the linked pair can go on another character if that better suits your lineup.

Aerith: magic, healing, and multi-target spells

Aerith is the party’s magic specialist, making her a strong home for healing and offensive spells. Magnify linked with Healing can extend healing to multiple characters; linked with an offensive spell, it can hit multiple targets. For offensive spells, the selected target takes the bulk of the damage while surrounding targets take less, so do not assume every enemy will be hit equally. GameSpot’s loadout recommendations discuss both uses.

Adjust the setup to the encounter

  • Check elemental affinity first. Use Assess and enemy information before linking Elemental to a spell. Use the matchup to exploit a weakness, and avoid an element the enemy can resist or share.
  • Confirm linked sockets. Elemental needs a connected slot with the relevant magic materia. Check the equipped weapon or armor before planning around the effect.
  • Cover healing and defense. Magnify can support multi-target healing. Barrier is another option: GameSpot recommends leveling it for physical defense and its later Manaward effect against magic.
  • Move support materia where it helps most. Magnify, Time, and other support materia are party resources, not permanent character assignments. Consider who has the right linked slots and who needs the effect in this particular fight.
  • Equip a suitable summon when available. Choose one with the encounter in mind; a summon can also help take pressure off the party during healing.
  • Keep story and challenge builds separate. A general-purpose setup can differ from a boss or combat-simulator configuration. The Leviathan example is for that challenge, not a universal best build.

What makes a setup the right one?

Compare a build by what the fight asks of each character: physical pressure, ranged damage, magic, or support. Then check elemental matchups, linked-slot access, healing and defense coverage, and whether the encounter is a story battle or a specialized challenge. The available recommendations do not establish one optimal weapon-and-materia combination for every chapter, difficulty, or party arrangement.

This advice covers the original four-character party in Final Fantasy VII Remake: Cloud, Barret, Tifa, and Aerith. It does not cover the expanded party or materia systems in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
