Forever Ago is a single-player, photography-led road-trip adventure about Alfred, an older man traveling north with his dog after a devastating loss. Its strongest draw is an intimate story about grief, regret, and the possibility of new connections; its trade-off is a largely linear journey with limited player agency. MeriStation’s October 7, 2026 review praises the emotional writing, visuals, and music, while noting that the light interaction may not satisfy players looking for complex puzzles or consequential choices.
What kind of game is Forever Ago?
Developed by Third Shift, Forever Ago is the studio’s debut game. Third Shift describes it as a single-player narrative adventure: after a “tragic stroke of fate,” Alfred heads north in search of redemption, taking photographs, visiting places, and meeting people along the way. The Associated Press describes Alfred as a man in his seventies setting out with his dog and camera to deal with a broken heart.

The camera is part of the game, not a real-world accessory requirement. Photography gives the journey its central activity and ties exploration to Alfred’s memories.
How does the story and photography work?
MeriStation describes taking pictures at locations, choosing images for Alfred’s journal, and photographing certain collectibles from the right angle to unlock shared memories. That gives the road trip a personal record of what Alfred encounters, rather than making photography a separate competitive or technical system.

#1 Best Overall
The same review highlights the relationship between Alfred and Audrey, praising its tenderness and authenticity. It also describes the story’s approach to grief as a process of acceptance. The emotional focus is therefore less about solving a mystery or changing the world than about following Alfred through places, memories, and relationships.
Is Forever Ago a walking simulator?
That label is a reasonable shorthand for its gentle pace and emphasis on narrative, scenery, and observation, but it does not capture every interaction. Photography and collectible-related memory moments give players things to look for and do. Still, MeriStation’s review finds the route too linear, says choices have limited consequences, and reports that obstacles often have one obvious solution. Players seeking branching paths, demanding puzzles, or substantial control over the story may find the interaction slight.

- Step into the ego filled shoes of Duke Nukem, the steroidal one-man army who never fails and always gets the babes
- Enjoy Duke's constant stream of hilarious one-liners throughout the game will have gamers rolling
- Spend as much time as you want shooting hoops, lifting weights, playing pinball, pool, air hockey, and slots
- Packed with explosive FPS action, outlandish settings, vehicle driving, and puzzle solving -- gamers will never tire of the endless fun
- Enjoy multiplayer option like no other as Duke re-envisions classic modes of play in his own hilarious and humiliating way
The review also notes that finding the correct angle for some interactions can be frustrating. This is a reported criticism from MeriStation, not a claim based on an independent playthrough here.
What does Forever Ago do well?
- Emotional focus: MeriStation praises the warmth and authenticity of Alfred and Audrey’s relationship, and the story’s treatment of grief.
- Photography with a narrative purpose: Pictures and memories connect Alfred’s exploration to the people and places he encounters.
- Atmosphere: MeriStation highlights the low-poly visual style and accompanying music as strengths that support the reflective mood.
What are the drawbacks?
- Limited agency: According to MeriStation, the narrative is linear and player choices have little impact.
- Simple obstacles: The review says many obstacles have an obvious single solution, which may leave little room for experimentation.
- Interaction friction: MeriStation reports that some interactions require a precise angle that can be annoying to find.
- PS5 performance note: MeriStation encountered slight stutters on PS5. That is a platform-specific observation from its review, not evidence of a problem on every system.
How long is Forever Ago?
MeriStation estimates a completion time of about four to five hours. Treat that as one reviewer’s estimate rather than a developer-specified duration or a guarantee; individual playtime can vary with pace and exploration.

- ALL-TIME FAMILY FAVORITE: Classic Yahtzee is the best-selling and most famous dice game of all-time. Families and friends have been enjoying this American icon since the fabulous 50's
- THE BACKGROUND: Luck plays a big role in Yahtzee, but strategy makes a huge difference. You score each combination just once, and the number of different combinations you can score is equal to the number of turns in the game
- THE PLAY: Roll all 5 dice on your turn. If you don't like what you've rolled, you can keep any amount of dice and re-roll the rest up to 2 more times
- FAST PACED: The game ends after each player has 13 turns and filled every box in the column with a score or a zero. The Player or Team with the highest total score for all games (up to six) wins
- WHAT ARE THE ODDS?: Did you know that the odds of rolling a Yahtzee (5 OF A KIND) on your first roll are 1295 to 1? So you won't see that happen very often
What platforms is Forever Ago on, and when did it launch?
Third Shift’s official page listed the game as coming October 8, 2026. In October release-week coverage, the Associated Press listed Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, with launch scheduled for Thursday, October 8. Storefront availability can vary by region and may change after launch, so check the relevant platform store for current purchase options.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Forever Ago worth your time?
Forever Ago is most appealing if you want a short, contemplative story carried by character relationships, photography, scenery, and music. MeriStation’s review suggests those qualities are the game’s strengths, while its linear structure and light interaction are the main compromises. If your priority is exploration freedom, complex puzzles, or choices that reshape the plot, the experience may feel too restrained; if you are comfortable with a guided road trip and a modest amount of interaction, its emotional focus may be the better fit.
