BLOL is a community restoration currently presented as a playtest—not a fully finished release—and its English localization is extensive but incomplete.
Before you install: check the current build and playtest caveats
Borderlands Online was originally released in China in 2015 and cancelled shortly afterward; BLOL is a community restoration. The project’s download page labels the current release a playtest and says its latest version was uploaded October 4, 2026. Check the date shown there before downloading. Expect an in-progress experience. The project says it is still fixing bugs and improving the game. GamesRadar+ reported playtest warnings about bugs, broken skills and animations, and server outages on October 5, 2026; those are reported issues, not a guarantee that every player will encounter them. Extract the downloaded archive to a folder you choose.

Run the installer located outside the Game Files folder.

Open the game launcher, choose a server from its server section, and launch the game.

At the login screen, enter a username and password. If no one has claimed those credentials, BLOL creates an account using them. Use a unique password: the project says it cannot restore access if you forget your login details.

For later sessions, sign in with the same credentials. To update an existing game build, the project’s instructions say to replace the Game Files folder, run the installer again, and choose Add/Replace. Official installation instructions
Choose the right server before creating an account
The launcher lists Europe, North America East, and Offline (Local). Select an online region before making an account: BLOL says accounts created on one online server cannot be transferred to another. BLOL Download Now

In the launcher, set the server path to the OfflineServer folder inside Game Files.

Choose Offline on the right side of the launcher.

Point the launcher to the offline server executable inside the OfflineServer folder, then start the game.
Offline play removes multiplayer functionality. You can copy an online character to the local server through the launcher’s Game Sync tab, but the transfer only goes from online to local—not from local back to online. Game Sync requires the online servers, so it will not be available if those servers shut down. The official guide also describes importing a previously downloaded save file through Game Sync. Is Borderlands Online playable in English?
Mostly, but not completely. BLOL’s FAQ says the game is largely localized into English; some Chinese text and textures may remain, and translated textures can differ in font or color from the original. Is BLOL free, and is its download safe?
The project says BLOL is free and has no paid features or microtransactions. It also warns that antivirus software or Windows Defender may flag files because the executables are unsigned and the package includes miscellaneous DLLs. The project describes these detections as false positives and links a VirusTotal scan, but that is the project’s own characterization—not an independent security guarantee.
