The “Borderlands MMO revival” is BLOL, a community restoration of the China-focused Borderlands Online—not a new official Borderlands release. What is BLOL?
BLOL is a community restoration of Borderlands Online, which the project FAQ describes as a 2015 experience released in China and cancelled shortly afterward. It is distinct from Borderlands 2, and the available sources do not establish that it continues that game’s story. What is BLOL’s current status?
GamesRadar reported on October 5, 2026, that BLOL had entered public playtesting and could be played online or offline. The report described localization work that included resizing interface elements and making replacement HUD elements. It also relayed project lead EpicNNG’s warning to expect bugs, broken skills, animation problems, server outages and other inconveniences while the restoration was still being improved. These are reported playtest caveats, not a guarantee that every player will encounter each problem. GamesRadar, October 5, 2026
The project FAQ says an account is required. Because access and stability can change in a community project, check the current BLOL FAQ for access details before trying it.

Is BLOL free to play?
The BLOL FAQ says the restoration is free, has no paid features or microtransactions, and does not aim to make money. It also warns that anyone charging for anything related to the project is a scam. Do not treat a paid BLOL offer as official access. BLOL FAQ

Choose Borderlands 2 for a campaign and group play
If you want a conventionally presented, officially listed Borderlands campaign with four-player co-op or split-screen, Borderlands 2 is the straightforward choice. The Xbox store listing is a direct reference for the game and its listed co-op options.

Try BLOL to explore the series’ lost branch
If your priority is seeing what Borderlands Online was, BLOL is the more unusual option—but approach it as a community restoration in playtesting, not as a polished replacement for Borderlands 2. The available sources do not verify the restoration’s complete feature set, so do not assume every planned MMO system is present.
Think of them as different kinds of experience
This is not a choice between a new sequel and an old one. BLOL restores a separate Borderlands Online experience; Borderlands 2 is the official campaign game in this comparison.
