Choose s&box if you want to build a game in an editor using C# and scene-based tools; choose Garry’s Mod if you want to play in an existing sandbox and extend it with Lua or GLua addons. They support different creation workflows, so neither is a direct replacement for the other. Which is easier to learn depends largely on your programming and game-development background.
What’s the main difference?
s&box is a game-creation platform built on Source 2. Its documentation describes an editor-based workflow for making games, with scenes, GameObjects, components, visual tools, code, networking, and publishing. Facepunch’s s&box documentation presents it as a platform for creating games and addons.
Garry’s Mod is an established sandbox game with player-facing tools and a developer ecosystem of game modes, addons, Lua scripting, and server resources. The Garry’s Mod Wiki covers both playing and development, including Lua and GLua references.
In practical terms, s&box starts with making a project in an editor; Garry’s Mod starts with an existing game that you can play, script, and extend.

What modding means in each one
Garry’s Mod: scripting and extending an existing sandbox
Garry’s Mod’s Lua and GLua materials are the relevant route if you want to script features for the game, work with its APIs, or build addons and game modes. The wiki organizes guides for addons, Lua, sandbox tools, and game modes. Its learning resources include Programming in Lua for the language itself; use Garry’s Mod’s GLua/API documentation as well, since a general Lua book does not cover game-specific APIs.
s&box: distinguish games from addon projects
In s&box, a game project is the code-oriented route for building a game. Addon projects have a narrower role: the current Addon Project documentation, updated August 20, 2026, says they can publish assets for a target game but cannot yet contain code; ActionGraph can be used. That means an s&box addon project is not equivalent to a code-bearing Garry’s Mod addon.

Facepunch’s documentation describes C# hotloading, which lets developers apply C# changes without restarting, alongside editor-based authoring. The exact project workflow and available features can change, so check the current documentation when starting a project.
Which one is easier to learn?
There is no published comparative user study or authoritative difficulty rating in the cited sources. Any claim that one is universally easier would overstate what is known. A more useful way to choose is to match the learning path to what you already know and what you want to make.

- s&box may feel more familiar if you already know C# or have used a scene-based game engine. That is an inference from its documented language and editor workflow, not a measured difficulty result.
- Garry’s Mod may suit you better if your goal is to learn Lua and script inside an existing sandbox game. That, too, is a practical inference rather than a measured comparison.
- Consider the kind of project: choose s&box to build a game in its editor; choose Garry’s Mod to modify or create content for Garry’s Mod itself.

Start with s&box
- Follow Facepunch’s Getting Started guide, which leads beginners through installation, exploring a scene, and creating a first C# project.
- Learn the editor’s scene, GameObject, and component model, then decide whether visual authoring with ActionGraph or C# is the better fit for your task.
- Use the code documentation for C# and hotloading details, and check the current project-type documentation before choosing a game or addon project.
Start with Garry’s Mod
- Use the Garry’s Mod Wiki to find its Lua and GLua learning materials and developer guides.
- Learn the relevant Lua basics, then move to the Garry’s Mod API documentation for game-specific behavior and conventions.
- Choose a focused goal—such as a small addon or game-mode change—and consult the wiki’s corresponding guides and references as you build.
Availability and current caveats
Facepunch’s s&box documentation describes standalone distribution as in preview, requiring Valve approval and a Facepunch license. It also says Facepunch takes no engine royalties or revenue share, while Steam’s standard terms still apply. Check the current documentation before relying on standalone distribution, since this status may change.
Facepunch’s s&box About page displayed Windows and Linux support and listed macOS as “soon” when checked on October 7, 2026; platform availability is time-sensitive. The same page displayed $928,576.19 as cumulative Play Fund payouts to creators at that time. That figure is a changing total, not an annual amount, forecast, or estimate of what an individual creator will earn.
