Warlock is described as a third-person open-world action-adventure starring one authored hero; Larian presents BG3 as a cinematic, player-driven D&D RPG shaped by character creation, exploration and player choices. The difference is not simply camera angle or setting—it is how each game frames its hero, combat and story.
Is Warlock like Baldur’s Gate 3?
Only at a broad level: both draw on Dungeons & Dragons. Their stated formats point in different directions. Developer coverage describes Warlock as a single-player, third-person open-world action-adventure, while Larian describes Baldur’s Gate 3 as an expansive, cinematic, player-driven RPG based on 5e D&D.
That distinction matters more than a simple comparison of fantasy settings. Warlock is framed around direct action as a fixed protagonist; BG3’s official description foregrounds freedom to explore, experiment and interact with a world whose story responds to the player. Larian’s overview is broad positioning rather than a complete mechanical specification, so it does not establish a one-to-one feature comparison with Warlock.
How do the protagonists and stories differ?
Warlock centers on Kaatri, a written character
In a GamesRadar+ interview, Invoke general manager Dominique Guay described Kaatri as a written character whose main narrative moments are authored. He said players should not expect to play an evil or good version of Kaatri, or to experience different main narrative moments from other players. That makes the story’s central viewpoint more fixed than a character-creation-led RPG.

- Online multiplayer for up to four players - allows you to combine your forces in combat, and split your party to follow your own quests and agendas. Concoct the perfect plan together… or introduce an element of chaos when your friends least expect it
- Origin Character - offer a hand-crafted experience, each with their own unique traits, agenda, and outlook on the world. Their stories intersect with the entire narrative, and your choices will determine whether those stories end in redemption, salvation, domination, or many other outcomes
- Evolved turn-based combat - based on the D&D 5e ruleset. Team-based initiative, advantage & disadvantage, and roll modifiers join combat cameras, expanded environmental interactions, and a new fluidity in combat that rewards strategy and foresight
- Define the future of the Forgotten Realms - through your choices, and the roll of the dice. No matter who you play, or what you roll, the world and its inhabitants will react to your story
- Player-initiated turn-based mode - allows you to pause the world around you at any time even outside of combat. Whether you see an opportunity for a tactical advantage before combat begins, want to pull off a heist with pin-point precision, or need to escape a fiendish trap. Split your party, prepare ambushes, sneak in the darkness -- create your own luck!
BG3 puts player-created characters and choices up front
Larian’s support description emphasizes character creation and a story shaped by player actions. In practical terms, the contrast is between following the authored arc of Kaatri in Warlock and entering BG3 through a character you create, with player decisions helping define how the story unfolds. The available descriptions do not establish that either game offers more total narrative content or depth.
What is combat and interaction focused on?
Warlock emphasizes melee combined with forbidden magic
Warlock’s official site describes combat as blending forbidden magic with melee weapons against monsters. This is the clearest stated combat hook: action built around combining those approaches. The description does not provide a full account of combat systems, so details beyond that emphasis should not be assumed.

BG3 emphasizes a world to explore and engage with
Larian’s official overview presents BG3 through freedom to explore, experiment and interact with a world of characters, dangers and deceit. It does not reduce the game to a single combat hook. This is a difference in how the games are positioned, not proof that one has more combat options or greater mechanical complexity.
How do their worlds and exploration differ?
Warlock’s reported setting is Darkon in Ravenloft
Recent coverage places Warlock in Darkon, a realm within Ravenloft’s Domains of Dread. That is reported setting context; it should not be treated as a complete official account of the game’s world. The official Warlock page’s cited description focuses on combat rather than confirming the setting.

Warlock’s open world is described as discovery-oriented
Developer coverage says Warlock is intended to have a smaller open world with fewer waypoints, encouraging discovery through player actions. This is a stated design goal, not a published map-size measurement or a guarantee of the final implementation. BG3’s official description instead stresses freedom to explore and interact with a thriving world, without making a directly comparable claim about its map structure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which game may suit you better?
- Warlock may be the closer fit if you want a third-person action-adventure with a defined protagonist, melee combat mixed with forbidden magic, and exploration described as discovery-led.
- Baldur’s Gate 3 may be the closer fit if you want to create a character and play a D&D RPG that foregrounds exploration, interaction and outcomes shaped by your actions.
These are differences in design emphasis, not a verdict on quality. Warlock’s cited descriptions come partly from developer interviews about intended design; BG3’s official pages establish broad positioning rather than every detail needed for a full systems comparison.
