Voice acting records what a character sounds like; motion capture (mocap) records how a performer moves. A game may use those performances separately, or capture voice and movement together. Studios often call the combined approach performance capture, sometimes including facial performance, but terminology varies by production.
What’s the difference between voice acting and motion capture in games?
Voice acting is the recorded vocal performance: dialogue, delivery, emotion, and timing. It can be recorded in an audio studio without the actor performing the character’s physical actions.
Motion capture records a performer’s physical movement and turns that data into material for character animation. Ubisoft Toronto Performance Capture Director Tony Lomanaco describes mocap in this narrower sense as capturing body movement. CD PROJEKT RED likewise describes its motion-capture sessions as recording animation and movement.
Performance capture often means recording multiple parts of a performance together—body movement, facial performance, and voice. Ubisoft uses the term this way. CD PROJEKT RED distinguishes it from motion capture by whether voice is recorded at the same time as animation. These are useful definitions, not universal industry rules; when discussing a particular game, follow the studio’s own description.

Does the voice actor also do the motion capture?
Sometimes, but it depends on the production. One performer can supply both the voice and physical performance; other games use separate performers or divide voice, body, and facial work among several people. Do not assume who did which part without a production-specific source.
One performer contributes voice and movement
For Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Troy Baker provided Indiana Jones’s voice and full motion capture. Creative Director Axel Torvenius said the in-game 3D model was driven by Baker’s performance, with the team shaping it to read as Indiana Jones. Voice and mocap sessions can be separate
Rockstar’s Max Payne 3 production feature describes voice recording in a New York studio and extensive performance-suit shoots at a motion-capture facility as distinct activities. That demonstrates separate sessions, but it does not establish that every game uses separate voice and movement performers. Rockstar’s production feature covers the workflow.
What happens during voice, mocap, and performance-capture sessions?
Voice-only recording
A voice session centers on vocal choices and dialogue. The actor may perform lines without acting out the character’s body movements, leaving animation to be created or coordinated through other parts of production.

Motion capture
On a capture stage, a performer acts in a tracked space while a system records movement. The recorded material can inform a character’s animation; it is not automatically a finished game scene.
Performance capture
A combined session can record body motion, facial performance, and voice in sync. CD PROJEKT RED describes using head-mounted cameras for facial capture and synchronizing body, face, and voice inputs. Ubisoft describes syncing facial, audio, mocap, and video data so editors can assemble a cinematic edit. How does captured performance become a game animation?
Capture is source material that production teams review, edit, and adapt to a digital character and the game’s needs. The data may be mapped or retargeted to a character, and animators can make adjustments after recording. For example, CD PROJEKT RED says finger movement may be recorded with a separate system, while animators may adjust hands later.
Captured movement can also support gameplay rather than only cinematic scenes. Ubisoft explains that motion matching can select, reorder, and blend captured movements to respond to the situations a game needs. Since a performer cannot record every possible gameplay situation, the animation system helps combine available material into suitable movement. How to compare two games’ performance workflows
When a game’s credits or behind-the-scenes coverage mentions voice acting, mocap, or performance capture, compare the specific inputs and production details rather than relying on the label alone.
- Inputs: Was voice recorded alone, or were body movement and facial performance captured too?
- Performers: Did one actor do multiple parts, or were voice actors, movement performers, and stunt performers assigned separately? Verify this for the game in question.
- Recording setup: Was the work done in an audio booth, on a capture stage, or in a combined session?
- Use in the game: Was the captured material used for a cinematic, character animation, a reusable movement library, or a gameplay animation system?
- Post-production: What editing, animation adjustment, retargeting, or blending did the studio describe after recording?
Quantic Dream has also described a setup that records body, face, and voice simultaneously as performance capture. That is another studio-specific example of the combined approach, not proof that every developer uses the term identically.
