How to Reduce Background Noise and Echo on a Headset Microphone

Find out whether callers hear room noise or their own voices returned, then follow the right device, app-setting, and headset checks to fix it.

If your headset microphone is picking up room sounds, turn on your calling app’s noise suppression. If other people hear their own voices repeated, check which microphone and speakers are active, lower loud speakers, and make sure audio is routed through the headset. These problems have different causes, so diagnose them separately before changing settings.

First, confirm which microphone and speakers the app is using

A headset can be connected without being selected as the active input or output. In the meeting or chat app, choose the headset microphone and headset speakers in the audio-device menus. If the app is using a laptop microphone or speakers instead, the headset’s controls will not fix the underlying routing problem.

Check devices in Microsoft Teams

  1. Open Settings and more > Settings > Devices.
  2. Inspect the microphone and speaker selectors and choose the headset for each.
  3. Use Make a test call where available to check the selected devices and microphone level.

Teams also offers automatic microphone sensitivity. Labels and locations can vary by app version and platform. See Microsoft’s Teams call-settings guide.

Check for another active device in the room

Make sure a second laptop, phone, or meeting device nearby is not also connected to the call with its microphone and speakers open. Zoom lists multiple active devices in one room, including participants using computer and telephone audio at once, as possible causes of echo. Its guidance is at Managing audio echo in a meeting.

Tell background noise apart from echo

  • Background noise: Other people hear fans, paper rustling, doors, or nearby conversation. Try noise suppression or voice isolation.
  • Echo: Other people hear their own words returned. Check speaker volume, device proximity, other active audio devices, and echo cancellation.

Noise suppression targets sounds around you; echo cancellation addresses audio from speakers being picked up and sent back through a microphone. One setting is not a substitute for the other.

Reduce background noise with the app’s processing controls

In Teams

Teams provides noise-suppression choices, including Background noise only. Its voice-isolation feature filters surrounding sound and other speakers; setting it up requires a voice profile when you are not using a headset, according to Microsoft’s voice-isolation guidance.

In Zoom

Zoom says noise suppression and echo cancellation are enabled by default. Its advanced audio options also expose software echo-cancellation levels and Windows signal-processing choices. Change one option at a time, then test the microphone so you can tell whether that specific change helped. Zoom notes that Windows audio changes can affect other apps using the same microphone or speakers; see Zoom’s advanced audio settings.

Reduce echo by changing the audio path and room setup

When listeners hear themselves, make sure call audio is playing through the headset rather than loud nearby speakers. Reduce speaker volume if speakers must be used, and avoid having multiple open microphone-and-speaker devices connected to the same call in one room.

A headset or earset with an attached microphone can help when room speakers are contributing to echo, because it keeps playback close to your ears rather than filling the room. A WHO-hosted Zoom best-practices document recommends a headset or earset equipped with a microphone for this purpose. This is a general setup suggestion, not a guarantee that a particular headset will eliminate echo.

Reconnect the headset if settings do not solve it

  1. Disconnect and reconnect the headset, then reselect it as the microphone and speaker in the app.
  2. Make another test call after reconnecting.
  3. If the app’s controls are malfunctioning, restart or update the app.
  4. Try another microphone or headset, if available, to see whether the problem follows the device.

Microsoft recommends reconnecting or trying a different microphone when troubleshooting voice isolation, and also suggests restarting or updating Teams if the feature is not working as expected: Microsoft’s voice-isolation troubleshooting.

If you are choosing a headset as a fallback

Look for a headset with an attached microphone that is compatible with your device and has a convenient mute control. Check whether any advertised noise processing applies to the microphone: noise cancellation for what you hear through the earcups and noise suppression for what the microphone sends are different functions. No particular model is established here as a best choice, and an attached microphone cannot guarantee that echo will disappear if another device or loud speaker remains active.
