Check the exact headset model against the exact device and connection you plan to use. A headset may play audio but fail to provide microphone or chat, and a 3.5 mm plug, USB receiver, and Bluetooth are not interchangeable. Verify each device and feature separately in the headset maker’s compatibility notes before buying.
Will this headset work with my PC, console, or phone?
Start with the specific headset model and the specific target device—not just “PC” or “phone.” Then confirm the connection method and whether both listening and microphone/chat are supported. A compatibility listing for one model does not establish support for another headset with the same connector.
- Write down the exact models. Record the headset model and the device, including console generation or phone model where relevant.
- Identify the headset’s connection options. Check whether it uses a 3.5 mm analog plug, USB cable, wireless USB receiver, Bluetooth, or multiple modes.
- Match the connection to the device. Confirm the device has the required jack or supports that particular USB or wireless method. If an adapter or controller is involved, include it in the check.
- Verify microphone and chat separately. Look for explicit support for voice input or chat; playback support alone does not prove that the mic works.
- Check platform-specific feature limits. Confirm whether wireless mode, chat/game balance, controls, or spatial-audio features work on the intended device and connection.
- After connecting, select the headset for input and output. Follow the device maker’s current setup instructions. For example, Corsair’s PS4 instructions call for selecting the wired headset as both input and output and routing all audio to headphones; menus vary by platform and system version. See Corsair’s compatibility and console support guidance.
What to check for each connection type
3.5 mm analog
A 3.5 mm connection can be convenient, but the presence of a jack does not establish that it supports a headset microphone. Check whether a PC has one combined headset socket or separate headphone and microphone sockets, and whether a controller or adapter is required. Microsoft lists its Xbox Stereo Headset for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows 10/11 devices with a 3.5 mm jack. That is a statement about this headset, not every 3.5 mm model. Corsair notes that the Nintendo Switch’s 3.5 mm audio port does not support a microphone; check the exact model and setup in Corsair’s console guidance.
A four-segment plug can carry a microphone connection, but wiring standards can differ. The Android Open Source Project headset specification describes CTIA wiring and distinguishes OMTP, which swaps the microphone and ground positions. Plug appearance alone is not enough to confirm that a particular headset and device will match.

USB cable or wireless USB receiver
USB compatibility depends on the device supporting USB audio and on the specific headset or receiver working with that platform. PlayStation’s PS5 FAQ says most USB and analog headsets are supported, while recommending that buyers check the headset maker for model-specific support.
Wireless USB receivers are especially model-specific. Logitech says the G935’s USB Wireless Mix Adapter works with PS4 and Nintendo Switch, but not Xbox One; see its G935 compatibility guide. By contrast, SteelSeries describes the Arctis 7X USB-C dongle for PC, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and Android, with platform-specific audio and microphone notes. Its guide says Windows PC supports wireless audio and microphone, PlayStation supports game audio and voice chat, and Android audio and mic work on most USB-C devices. The included USB-C-to-USB-A adapter is for devices without USB-C. These details apply to that model only: SteelSeries Arctis 7X setup.

Bluetooth
Bluetooth working with a phone does not mean it will work directly with a console. PlayStation’s PS5 FAQ says third-party Bluetooth wireless headsets are not supported, although most USB and analog headsets are supported. Check the console and headset documentation for an approved receiver or a wired connection instead: PS5 FAQ.
Phones and adapters
Some phones do not have a 3.5 mm jack. Apple says USB-C iPhones can use wired headphones through USB-C and identifies its USB-C-to-3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter for connecting 3.5 mm headphones or speakers. That guidance is specific to USB-C iPhones; do not assume every Android phone or adapter behaves the same way. If you need voice chat, check microphone support for the adapter, cable, phone, and headset as a complete path. See Apple’s adapter guidance.

How to compare two inexpensive headsets
For each candidate, check the same practical details rather than comparing connector labels:
- Connection path: note whether it uses 3.5 mm, USB, a wireless USB receiver, or Bluetooth on each target device.
- Audio versus microphone/chat: look for explicit support for both functions on each platform.
- Extra hardware: identify any required controller jack, receiver, USB-C-to-USB-A adapter, phone adapter, or PC audio splitter.
- Feature differences: check whether wireless mode, chat/game balance, spatial audio, controls, or app features change when connected to another device.
- Evidence for the exact combination: prefer the headset maker’s listing or setup instructions for your model, device, and connection mode.
If the maker does not explicitly list microphone support for your combination, treat that part as unconfirmed rather than assuming that audio playback proves chat will work.
