A Genshin Impact tier list is one guide author’s estimate of how characters perform under particular assumptions—not an official verdict on who is worth building or pulling. To judge whether a ranking applies to your account, check its patch date, role, target content, investment assumptions, and team requirements, then compare those with the characters and resources you actually have.
What a tier list can—and cannot—tell you
A tier is a relative judgment within the scope of a specific list. It may compare characters separately by role, or rank them according to a broader idea such as account value. A character’s placement therefore has meaning only alongside the guide’s criteria.
For example, Icy Veins’ Version 7.1 list, updated September 23, 2026, separates Main DPS, Sub DPS, and Support. Its author describes the rankings as a rough estimate of performance relative to others in a role—not a universal ordering of every character. Read the Icy Veins Version 7.1 tier list.
Third-party rankings are editorial opinions, not official HoYoverse data by default. GenshinPatch explicitly describes its August 4, 2026 rankings as community meta opinions, assumes reasonable artifact investment, and considers overall account value, team flexibility, investment efficiency, and performance across Spiral Abyss, overworld, and endgame content. See GenshinPatch’s tier list.

A ranking can help answer, “How does this guide rate this character for this role and content?” It cannot answer by itself, “Should I pull or build this character?” for every player. Icy Veins’ author Holster puts the point plainly: “Please know that every character in Genshin Impact is viable regardless of their ranking and can clear all content with enough investment.” That is the guide author’s view, not an official HoYoverse guarantee.
Why two lists can rank the same character differently
Different rankings may be internally consistent while measuring different things. Before comparing letter grades, compare the rules each publisher used.
Rank #2
| What to check | Why it changes the ranking | Examples from current guides |
|---|---|---|
| Patch and update date | Rankings are snapshots; new characters and guide revisions can change the context. | Icy Veins lists Version 7.1 and a September 23, 2026 update; KeqingMains’ index lists Version 7.1 Phase I updates dated September 2026. |
| Role | A support and an on-field damage dealer do different jobs, so comparing them as if they were interchangeable can mislead. | Icy Veins separates Main DPS, Sub DPS, and Support. |
| Target content | A character’s value may differ between combat-focused challenges, exploration, and a broad account-value assessment. | GenshinPatch includes Spiral Abyss, overworld, and endgame; ForgeGuides states a rubric weighted toward Spiral Abyss, exploration utility, and future investment security. |
| Build and investment assumptions | Constellations, weapons, artifacts, and investment level affect what a ranking represents. | GenshinPatch assumes reasonable artifact investment. ForgeGuides assumes C0 for five-star characters and C6 for four-star characters unless noted. |
ForgeGuides’ stated weighting—60% Spiral Abyss performance, 25% overworld and exploration utility, and 15% future investment security—is that publisher’s editorial rubric for its July 11, 2026 list. Those percentages are not measured game-wide statistics or an industry standard. Read ForgeGuides’ 2026 tier list and methodology.
How to apply a ranking to your account
- Match the patch. Check the guide’s version and update date. If it is older than the game version you are playing, treat placements as potentially out of date rather than assuming they describe the current snapshot.
- Match the job. Look for the character’s role in the list and ask whether that is the job you need. A high Support placement does not mean the character fills a Main DPS gap.
- Match the content. Decide whether you care most about Spiral Abyss, exploration, endgame modes, or broad account flexibility. A list that prioritizes one may not reflect your own goals.
- Check the build assumptions. Note constellation levels, weapon quality, artifact investment, and any team requirements. If the guide does not make an assumption clear, do not silently treat its ranking as a guaranteed result for your build.
- Compare with your roster and priorities. Consider which roles your account lacks, which teammates you own, what you are willing to invest, and whether you enjoy playing the character. A lower-ranked character who fits your teams or preferences may be more useful to you than a higher-ranked one.
Use build guides to inspect what rankings leave implicit
A tier placement compresses many build and team decisions into one label. Character guides can help you see the practical details behind that label, including artifacts, weapons, stats, and team options.
KeqingMains’ guide and theorycrafting index organizes character resources around builds, artifacts, weapons, and teams, with Version 7.1 Phase I updates listed for September 2026. GameWith’s artifact guide, updated October 5, 2026, provides character-specific artifact sets and stat priorities. Treat recommendations as guidance to evaluate a build, not proof that every character has one universally optimal setup.

Questions such as “What characters are good to invest in?”, “What teams should I build?”, “What weapon can I use?”, and “Should I use this character with this team?” depend on account details. A useful comparison needs the roster, constellation levels, and equipment context—not just a character’s tier.
