In Genshin Impact, start with what the character’s Talents scale from and what the character must do in the team. Then meet the Energy Recharge (ER) needed for the intended rotation, account for reaction ownership, and compare personal stats with team-benefiting set bonuses.
Start with the character’s kit and team job
Read the relevant Talent descriptions before choosing main stats. Most damage-dealing Talents scale with ATK unless the description specifies another stat. A role such as “support” or “DPS” does not tell you what a character’s damage, healing, shielding, or buffs use.
Next, decide what the character is doing in the actual team. Some characters fill more than one role, and supports can contribute substantial damage. The same character may need different stats and sets in different teams: KeqingMains, for example, distinguishes Raiden Shogun’s Hypercarry and Hyperbloom builds in its Artifacts Guide.
Match stats and sets to the role
On-field or personal-damage DPS
Build around the stats that scale the character’s damage and the reactions in the team. For a typical ATK-scaling elemental damage dealer, a starting point is ATK% or, when reactions warrant it, Elemental Mastery (EM) Sands; an elemental damage Goblet; and a CRIT Rate or CRIT DMG Circlet. Substats often favor CRIT and the character’s other relevant scaling stats after enough ER for the rotation.
#1 Best Overall
This is a baseline, not a formula. Team buffs, weapon, reaction use, and kit can change which stat is most valuable. KeqingMains generally recommends prioritizing artifact stats over set bonuses for DPS characters, while noting exceptions such as Blizzard Strayer’s CRIT Rate benefit for Freeze DPS.
Tartaglia illustrates the baseline without defining it for every Hydro DPS: his Quick Guide lists ATK% Sands, a Hydro DMG Goblet, and a CRIT Circlet. Its substat priority begins with CRIT, then ATK%, EM, and ER; ER matters until he can use his Ranged Burst every rotation.
Rank #2
Off-field damage dealer
Build an off-field damage dealer around the scaling and damage type of its Skill or Burst, and meet its ER needs. “Support” does not mean personal damage should be ignored.
Fischl’s Quick Guide prioritizes ER until the requirement is met, then CRIT and ATK%. In Aggravate teams, ATK% and EM can be comparable; Golden Troupe is recommended for off-field Skill damage. Her ER requirement changes with constellation, team, and enemies.
Buffer or utility support
If a necessary buff or utility depends on the Burst, prioritize enough ER to use it on schedule. Then invest in the stats the kit uses for its buff or damage. Choose artifact sets for what the team needs: Noblesse Oblige can help Burst-reliant ATK-scaling teams, Viridescent Venerer can reduce resistance to the element Swirled by an Anemo support, and Deepwood Memories can reduce Dendro resistance for Dendro teams. These are useful options, not exclusive assignments.
Healer or defensive support
Prioritize the stat that improves the character’s healing or defensive function. If the relevant utility depends on a Burst, account for ER as well. A set can also provide team value beyond the wearer’s personal output.
For a pure-healer build, Kuki Shinobu’s Quick Guide offers HP% and EM main-stat options and lists Healing Bonus, HP%, or EM for the Circlet. It ranks HP% above EM, followed by ER/CRIT, and describes Tenacity of the Millelith as improving her healing while providing a team ATK buff.
Reaction driver
Identify who triggers each reaction, how often, and whether the character also deals meaningful damage through Talent hits. EM is especially important for transformative reaction damage, but “reaction build” does not automatically mean triple EM. Some reactions can CRIT or add damage to Talent hits, changing the balance between EM, CRIT, and other scaling stats.
Best Value
Keqing’s Quick Guide prioritizes CRIT for Aggravate and treats ATK% and EM as roughly comparable in that context. EM can become more valuable in Quickbloom or Quickburn because of the additional transformative reaction damage.

- Meet the rotation’s ER requirement. If the character needs a Burst at a particular point in the rotation, establish the team- and rotation-specific ER target first. KeqingMains recommends using its Energy Recharge Calculator for an exact requirement rather than applying a universal threshold.
- Identify the stats that serve the job. Check Talent scaling and the character’s guide for the stats that improve damage, healing, shielding, buffs, or reaction contribution.
- Look for team-wide utility. A set bonus may be more valuable than a small increase to the wearer’s personal stats if it improves team output or supplies utility such as resistance reduction.
- Compare the pieces you actually have. Weigh substats, team buffs, and the full set bonus together. DPS builds often favor strong stats over a set bonus, while supports often gain more from a four-piece team-support set; these are tendencies, not rules.
This comparison matters because damage depends on interacting factors: the attacker’s stats and Talents, enemy defenses and resistances, and reactions. No one stat is best for every character and team.
Use character-specific targets, not universal thresholds
There is no role-wide ER target, damage gain, or stat breakpoint that applies to every build. Requirements shift with the character, team, rotation, and encounter. Treat general role advice as a starting point, then check a current character guide and calculate ER for the intended rotation. KeqingMains is a community theorycrafting resource rather than official HoYoverse documentation, and individual recommendations can change as characters, artifact sets, and team rotations evolve.
As KeqingMains puts it, “Combat in Genshin Impact is a team effort, and understanding a character’s role in a team is essential for effective character building.” The guide also notes that, with enough investment, any character can complete overworld and story content; optimizing artifacts is most useful when you want to improve a particular team or challenge.
